If you happen to be in Chicago on a Monday, don't miss the No Am/Pro Jam at Andy's at 11 E. Hubbard (at State) just West of the Tribune Tower.
It starts at 9 PM with the house band (John Baney, bass; John Young, piano; Charlie Brown, drums; and Art Davis, trumpet).
This Monday, after the regulars offered some tasty renditions of "Bernie's Tune," "What's New,"and other standards, they were joined by a conga drummer and the first of several newcomers on the Chicago music scene.
A lanky young redheaded guy belted out a Fats Waller vocal medley with a lot of style.
Then a large young man named Kalique who reminded me of how I picture Fats Navarro got up with his tiny Vito clarinet and proceded to blow the pads off on "Cottontail."
Then a bone player joined in and the house fell down.
When I left at midnight still more musicians were arriving and unpacking their cases. It was a real throwback to the day, and the audience loved it.
Cover is just $10 and imported beer's $5. Not bad for a real taste of Chicago jazz with the extra excitement of maybe, just maybe, hearing one of tomorrow's greats!
