I am curious what those of you who play a lot of C Trumpet do when it comes to etudes. For example, let's take basics such as Arban, Clark and Schlossberg. I bet just about everyone plays the notes as written, a whole tone higher than they would be if playing on a Bb. And then you have etudes such as the Sachse and Cafarelli. What I do there is transpose to whatever key the etude calls for, regardless of whether I am using a C or Bb at the moment. But what does everyone do with etudes such as Charlier, Bitsch, Hering, Longinotti, etc? Do you transpose them back to Bb or do you play the notes as written? I have heard that Herseth loved to warm up with Charlier #2 before a performance. Since he played C trumpet almost exclusively, did he transpose it back to Bb or did he play the notes as written?

Personally, I do both. Play it as written and transpose it. I also do the same on the Bb - play it as written and then transpose it for C trumpet.
You get to know the etudes very well!

I generally transpose any parts written for Bb when I'm playing C. Like Mike said though, you know you have a firm grasp on them when you can do both.
