When playing a part written for "Alto" trumpet in F, on a C trumpet, would you transpose DOWN a fifth? Some Alto trumpet parts lie above the staff, causing me to think that the transposition is down a fifth, not up a fourth. Who knows?

Yes, definitely down the 5th. There's a few orchestral parts which use this transposition. Shostakovich Symphony No. 1 comes to mind, there's also alto trumpet in f in Rimsky's Mlada. |

Second Question:
Is the Alto trumpet a bigger horn, and if so, wouldn't you want to play the part on a Bb?
Thanks again.

Yes, Bb is probably a better choice. Some of the parts are low enough to be off the bottom of a C trumpet anyhow. |

Check out "Polonaise" from Christmas Eve by Rimsky-Korsakov - 3rd trumpet in alto F and has some nice solos!

Anyone here got the Sibelius program?
If you want to transpose a song you can just scan in the piece of music, transpose it and then print out the transposed music. _________________ SCHILKE

Hey trumpeter, transposing is so much fun! Why would you want to "cheat" and make a part in the key of your horn?!

Well, changing a 9-10 page piece of music can be kind of time consuming. Especially when there are hardly any rests. _________________ SCHILKE

I think someone here is not realizing that transposing is done "at sight."
