I have recently purchased a trumpet, used of course, and already know scales, modes, theory, etc. That is not the issue. What is going on is....
When I blow air into the trumpet, no sound comes out, only air and air sound, if that makes sense. I would like to know if it is something I am doing or maybe a trumpet problem?
Thanks, I appreciate you help

Try using a trumpet mouthpiece.
No, really, find a trumpet player and ask, observe and experiment. Words are limited. (although someone here will probably try to use 'em) _________________ "Truth is not in the heights but at the bottom of all things."

Are all your vavles turned the right way? Depending on the brand, valves are usually numbered. On my yamaha the numbers all have to face me or nothing comes out but played a Benge once where the numbers all faced away from me. If that doesn't work ask a trumpet player in your area. |

What worked for my young nephews was the advice to first: close the mouth with lips together and make a sound like an elephant (learning to buzz the lips together). Now do the same thing with the trumpet (mouthpiece) lightly on the lips...
Of course, most beginners lesson books have better descriptions and pictures...

Well what you can do is this...
Take the mouth piece ot of the horn and put it to you lips. Then start blowing, making no sound. Slowly work the mouth so you are making a buzz. Try to make the buzz "AIRY" and not "TIGHT". This will keep you tone nice and open. Also when playing the trumpet keep your throat open. An "O" sound. Breathing exercises are something you should do, breathing in deaply and slowly letting it out. _________________ SCHILKE

I've tried all of the suggestions, but am still having no luck. Nothing comes out but air out of the bell. |

It's all about the concept of Hup Poo. Say the word "Hup." Your lips should be closed on top of each other. Now comes the "Poo" part. With your lips still closed from above, blow the air out of your lips and it will make a sound kind of like a fly. At first it probably will be low in pitch, that's ok. Just try to get it under control. Practice it until you can just put your lips together, blow, and produce a sound. When that works, try doing it on the horn. I know it sounds crazy, but it does work. For advanced players, it helps to eliminate the delayed tone effect. _________________ --Matt--

Ok. I'm working on that. How long does something as basic as that take to get under somewhat control?
So if you don't make the buzzing sound, no sound come out of the trumpet? |
