While I haven't used a Softone, I've seen players place a hat or cap over the bell of their trumpet to obtain a soft, muted effect, especially in a small combo gig. I would expect the Softone to sound somewhat similar.
This past summer at a college jazz band reunion, I sat and listened to two older cats--trumpet and sax--swapping solos during a poolside gig. The trumpet player continually muted his horn with an old cap over the bell--he played and sounded great!
The Humes & Berg Softone 187 sells for $30.99 through Giardinelli's. _________________ Pete Blaise

I had a similar mute many years ago, had a foam rubber ring inside the bag to seat a mic, although I can't say I liked the sound. I had an old felt dress hat, a little smaller than a fedora, that made the best soft mute, until an old girlfriend laid claim to it. |
