the only true benefit of comparison is to improve your own or your students playing. I do entirely agree that we compare and criticise just for the sake of it sometimes and it is in our nature to do so. I'd be careful about expressing too many opinions early on in your career however, you might change your mind later but gain a rep for having a different and very strange opinion and consequently the people in power might thnk you're an idiot. Personnally I get quite embarrased reading some of the opinions that are voiced. I check out the players profile and realise they're some 17 school band kid(so naturally you can forgive them) but my first reaction (before I've calmed down) is who the hell are you to be saying this, have some respect!
I'd be interested in a really really serious player's' opinion like Friedrich, Marsalisis' on Nakariakov. They're all in the same league so their opinions are much more founded and they wouldn't give an opinion until they'd done they're research, thats one of the factors that puts them in that league.

Anyone student who doesn't appreciate Nakariakov's playing has either not listened to enough of his stuff, doesn't have any taste, or is far too narrow minded. Go and get the CD "Echoes from the past", if you don't appreciate that then well god help you

I'm with BBD on this one. As for interpretation, check out the movie clip. Simple, 1st year beginner band range and technique.

I have heard him live and many of his recordings. A very technical player, but not very musical in my mind. There are many players who are significantly better.

Hey Pedal!

Where did you hear him play live?

I'm just wondering. I'd love to go hear him play live again and didn't know if he comes to the states that much anymore.

Thanks in advance,

Trent

I heard him play at the Grand Theater in Wausau, WI. This was probably around 1996 +/- a couple of years. He did the Concerto for Trumpet and Piano (Shostakovich). That is not one of my favorite pieces - so that may have affected my reaction. He also played the Arbucklenian(?) piece as an encore, along with a really cool little tune on the piccolo trumpet.

At the time I thought his technical ability was amazing (and am sure it still is), but I thought that he lacked a little with regard to interplay with the orchestra and really making the piece come alive.

I must admit to being quite SHOCKED at some of the responses on this thread. I would expect responses like "He's not the best player", but to say Sergei isn't or doesn't sound musical is absurd.

I've listened to and compared Serg's recordings with those of Maurice Andre and Wynton (The Hummel, for example), and I found Serg's version to be the most musical and technical.

I think Sergei used to only play Bb and Pic. YIKES! I don't know what he plays now... but I'd assume it's a Bb, C (maybe?), flug and pic.

Anyone know for sure?

I gotta go shed.

Sergei is great, but like others have said, there is no "greatest". Comparing players does get boring after a while. Before you know it people will be comparing Phil Smith and Jon Faddis....Oh wait...Didn't we do that a few months ago in the Gil Johnson Vs. Maynard thread? lol...

Thatcher - no question

The way she wielded that handbag was right up there with the greats!

Serious: Sergei is in my top three classical players.
I agree his early recording were sometimes a bit dull, but he was only 14 or 15 years when he recorded the Haydn (in a recent interview he says, he just doesn't like this music (Haydn, Hummel etc), because he doesn't understand these concerti completely, but playing this music is a rite of passage for every trumpet player, so he had to...only the last few cd's he's playing the music and style he likes...)

The things he does nowadays are truly fantastic. He left piccolo playing etc, now only playing his Bb trumpet and four valved flugel.
If he ever gets near you, go and listen.

Which of his new recordings do you recommend? I'll have to check them out.

How about....

Jennifer Lopez vs. Lin Biviano?

I would have to say Lin personally, his singing is WAY better

Hi guys,

When I go to see a piece, I don't just go to hear the music, but to experience an interpretation of the music. If I just wanted to hear it, I could get it on CD! The art of (classical) performance is the art of interpretation, so if we are informed we should have things to discuss about every performer and performance. I do accept that there are ridiculous extremes however... (Maynard v. Rod Franks anybody...)

Warm regards to all
