My old trumpet teacher loved to leave a lower lip moustache, and that helped him play.
For me it numbed the sensation of the mouthpiece on my lips.
I have a beard, trimmed short, and down to about 1 1/2 inches below the jaw line.
I can't play well on freshly shaved lips with a razor, nor on too long hair under the mouthpiece rim.
For me the best feel is to shave the area for the mouthpiece with a beard trimmer, so that it is like a 5:00 shadow length, both on the upper and lower lip.
My moustache is trimmed down too, so I don't get any hairs interfering with my lips or embouchure.
That's what I've found to work best for me.

I have a goatee..
however - My sister wa a beautician... I learned alot about male gromming from her....
here is how it should go
1. no disposible razors!
2. get at least a double blade razor with a pivotiing head (like a gillete mach 3 turbo)
3. only shave after you have taken a shower (mostiens your skin)
4. use a good product - shaving cream is ok but stuff like Lab creations (by Aramis) for mean makes a product that is more oil based and kinda like novicane - it numbs your skin
5. do not star on the areas next to the bottom of your chin going down to the neck - give the product longer to work on that area start with these area....,
6. Start with the sides - make sure you side burns are even (duh)
7. then do your upper lip
8. then do your chin
9. then you can work on the side of the chin going into the neck.....
10. You should shave everyday - it also exfoliates you skin - this is why old mens skin on there faces look better then old ladies (when they don't have their make up on)
11. You sould exfoliate you skin once in a while (monthly) - for men it is easy - use plain old sugar.... yep - wet some sugar and scrub your face to exfoliate the dead skin..
hope that helps,
-marc

1. Really hot towel to the face.
2. Lather up with a good foamy shave cream with lanolin.
3. Fresh blade in a Gillete Mach3 Turbo (the best).
4. Finish off with a good rinse and some great smelling but not too strong aftershave. _________________ Jay S.

I have been cursed with very sensitive skin, meaning that if I shave every day my skin gets very sore. I shave every two or three days and that seems to work fine for me. Any longer than this and I find the hairs get in the way of my playing.
If I have a big gig (or am event that requires me to be completely clean shaven - such as a friend's wedding this Saturday) I will make sure that I shave in the morning, but I often have to think ahead to make sure that it is a good day to shave.
King of Shaves rules!
Mach 3 Turbo rules!
Anything else leaves me red raw, especially electric shaving. Have tried it a few times - every time, pain! |

For me playing after a close shave does have an adverse effect. It seems like my top lip doesen't move as freely under the mouthpiece rim, like the skin is getting too much traction. Flexibility appears to suffer. The solution I found that works for me is to simply give my top lip a "Don Johnson" look by not pressing as hard on the (electric) razor so the shave isn't too close. A little bit of razor stuble seem to help the mouthpiece glide. |

Everyone should try this!!! My wife is a skin care specialist. My neck used to get all red and irritated, so I tried Nivea for Men shaving gel for sensitive skit. I've not been bothered by anythings.
Try this....
Use Nivea shaving gel
Use a mach 3 razor and shave slower and don't bear down
Shave right after the shower or in it (it opens up your pores and will not hurt as bad)
Hope my input helps! |

One more thing, Nivea after shave lotion will take away any burning feeling you may get and leave your skin moisturized. Nivea just came out with a exfoliting creame for men.

I'm so extremely careful when I shave, I do use a razor because it gives me the closest cut though. Can't remember the brand off the top of my head. |

I use a Gillette Mach 3 and sensitive skin shaving cream (though not always). I know what you mean about the chops feeling weird after shaving. I get it too. So I shave before I shower and the hot water from the shower seems to make them feel good. I can usually play very well after that. |
