The Library of Congress has begun preserving classic recordings, putting 50 items on the National Recording Registry. It's a really eclectic list that includes Enrico Caruso singing "Vesti la giubba," Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit," and Miles, Trane, Adderly and Evans playing "Kind of Blue."
Details in the 1/26/03 NY Times or at http://www.loc.gov/rr/record/nrpb
