I have had 4 or 5 of these types of "life-changing" experiences attending musical events and two of them belong to hearing Wynton in an intimate setting. tis not hyperbole to me. I know EXACTLY what you are feeling. He's a genius and an inspiration.

Hi Michael. Wish I could have heard him in the small setting described above in these posts... I'm sure it was really different than the big band at the Lied in Lincoln last month.. but I was thrilled to hear that.

I saw Wynton once, at a very small (like twenty tables on the floor, plus a low balcony with maybe another twenty) music club in LA area. I was at the second table from the stage (first was filled with what I took to be his entourage). He was incredible. I was dissappointed that the notes on his first few songs were exactly like the record, then eventually figured out that's what he wanted to play! He improvised up a storm on some other tunes. I didn't try to see him afterwards -- stupid, or just naive -- didn't even consider that I might be able to! This was during my layoff period, when I was thinking I wouldn't be playing again anyway. (Also stupid -- ya never know...)
