Hello fellow valve-o-holics. I play a lot of old big band charts, and I'm having problems sorting out the various mutes that are called for, such as: color, Ray Robinson, Shastock, etc. Can anyone give me the low down on these, and other vintage mutes? Are there accepted substitutes? Is there a "list 'o mutes" I can look at? I hate not using the correct mute. Thanks for your assistance.

Ray Robinson = fibre cup mute with a lining on a rim of the cup. The closest modern equivalent would be a Humes & Berg Mic-A-Mute.
Shastock = cup mute that has a removable metallic cup and a fibre body. I'm unaware of any modern equivalent, as most cup mutes tend to be all metal, all fibre or all composite. You still may be able to buy an actual Shastock Tonal-Color cup mute. The Jo-Ral Tri-Tone Cup is a metal cup mute with two different felts which the player may insert into the cup portion in order to change the tone of the mute; this mute may come close to approximating a Shastock cup.
Color = may be another reference to the Shastock Tonal Color cup mute. |

Every now and then, "Tonal Color" mutes show up on ebay.
There was one there just a few days ago. Might still be.
