I just remembered that one of my relatives has an old cornet or trumpet (I can't remember) that said I. Ingham, Maker on it and 1882, Dublin, London on it. I don't remember the other stuff and I can't see the horn till I go get it the weekend of the 15th. In the meantime does it sound familiar?

When you get to see the horn have a close look at the engraving.
There was an excellent company in the UK by the name of Highams (very close to I Ingham especially if the stamp is worn and has become difficult to read). My father has several old Highams brass instruments including a soprano cornet, a Bflat cornet and a euphonium. They are very good quality and beautiful historical instruments. It may not be a great 'player' if it is so old and bear in mind that it will most likely be in 'high' or 'brass band' pitch (nearly 1/4 tone above concert pitch).
I think that the company was absorbed into boosey and hawkes in the early 1920s.
All the best, Noel.

OK, I finally got ahold of the horn. It is silver and in rough condition (though with two slides straightened out it would be playable. The plating is almost all there still. This is what the bell says:

Patent
Clear Bore

Exhibition
Prize Medal
Awarded
London 1862 & Dublin 1865
to
J. Higham
Maker
2 Victoria St & 131 Gt Ducie St
Manchester
18675

To me this tells a lot but I still don't know much about the company or when the horn was made. Any more info?

edit: I just found this page with info
