Here's how Carmine used the Clarke book with me.
First week:
Take Ex. 1-6 and slur slowly for a week, two eighths to a beat at mm=60.
Second week:
Slur Ex. 1-6 fast for a week, six eighth notes to a beat.
Plus add Ex. 7-12 slur slow.
Third week:
Ex. 1-6 single tongue slow
Ex. 7-12 slur fast
Ex. 13-18 slur slow
Fourth week:
Ex. 1-6 single tongue fast
Ex. 7-12 single tongue slow
Ex. 13-18 slur fast
Ex. 19-25 slur slow
Fifth week:
Ex. 1-6 double tongue slow
Ex. 7-12 single tongue fast
Ex. 13-18 single tongue slow
Ex. 19-25 slur fast
Ex. 27-31 slur slow
Sixth week:
Ex. 1-6 double tongue fast
Ex. 7-12 double tongue slow
Ex. 13-18 single tongue fast
Ex. 19-25 single tongue slow
Ex. 27-31 slur fast
Ex. 32-36 slur slow
Seventh week:
Ex. 7-12 double tongue fast
Ex. 13-18 double tongue slow
Ex. 19-25 single tongue fast
Ex. 27-31 single tongue slow
Ex. 32-36 slur fast
Ex. 37-40 slur slow
The pattern should be clear at this time. On Ex. 133 you would use triple tonguing instead of double tonguing.
Apply the Four Rules to these exercises and DISREGARD all dynamic and phrase markings. Everything to be played at MF. Use three repeats on the First Study and Second Study: Exercises 1-44. You would play each line 4 times. Use one repeat thereafter for the rest of the book. Keep the mouthpiece on for each grouping of exercises.
Should take about 2 years to finish this assignment. At that time you will have played through the book six different ways!

Charly,
What about the repeats? Should these be respected or ignored? |

Nate & Murray,
I have answered your questions by editing my initial post ........ trying to keep all the info in one post for easier access.

so we just put 4 beats in between each exercise? does that count as you go from the slured to the single tounged sections or do you take the mouthpiece off. _________________ Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

Four beats for breathing may be inserted at any time. Carmine always said to breath BEFORE you need to. These are not intended to be endurance exercises for breath.
Yes, take the mouthpiece off between groups of exercises. So if you play #7-12 as a slow slur in the second week, then you would take the mouthpiece off and then play #1-6 as a fast slur. |

What was Caruso's view on tonguing/sylables/where it should strike... if he had any?

Caruso had no views or at least no views he would share about tonguing, syllables etc |

On page 28 and 29 of Musical Calisthenics For Brass, Mr Caruso advises using the syllable "TS" when practicing his tonguing exercise. He goes on to say that there is no correct placement of the tongue and that it will work anywhere in your mouth and follow the mpc wherever it is placed.
He says that the tongue works on the airstream like a valve to interrupt the airstream and that it will work better if the power of the airstream is constant. |

Great Post. I have been going back through the Clarke. I am interested to know over your years of playing, how many times have you come back to start this program over? Or, when you are done with this program have you "arrived" and there is no need to go back and go through it again? Is there a short maintenance segment that you do every now and then? Do your chops just stay in that great of shape because you play enough gigs? (Sorry for all the questions)
I am asking because I am a semi-musician in the fact that I have a small time gig, but I would like to keep getting better instead of hinging in the state of mediocrity that I am in now. Thanks

Hi all
I tried to follow the program, I'm into week four and I cannot complete the 18-25 (slur slow) group without removing the MP because my chops tire before; how should I proceed? |

Probably should be handled like the intervals. Stop when no sound comes out, rest about 15 seconds, pick up where you left off. Beware!! Caruso exercises are strenuous and there should be no hurry to move on to the next exercise. You may want to back off, go back to third week and stay there for a while |
