According to St. Louis trumpet icon Jim Manley, his trumpet student and friend Michael Manthey has passed away. Michael was on Maynard Ferguson's last touring band and served as Maynard's Valet as well. He also toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Michael posted on here as "Michael Manthey." Michael was 53 years old and the Coroner has ruled the cause of death as being a heart attack. |

This is terrible news. Michael was always very kind, and gave excellent advice. He and his playing will be missed. _________________ Matthew Anklan

Wow, that's just awful! I had a couple great PM conversations with him, and he was the person who really convinced me to check out Bob Reeves' stuff. Very hard to believe. May he rest in peace. _________________ 1970 Bach 37 Strad

Wow, sad news... R.I.P. Well, not that much peace, as he'll be playing along up there! _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

Oh, man, I'm so sorry to hear about this!
I guess he's back in the section with the Boss once again . . . maybe doubling as valet again, too.
Rest in peace, Michael! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

Mike and I have been friends since the 1970s when we were in college at SEM0. He has always been a great guy, a class act, a person you wanted to be around. He made good situations great and bad situations tolerable. And of course he was a monster player. _________________ Music is a fire in your belly, fighting to get out. He left us at far too young of an age. RIP and condolences to his friends and family. _________________ Matt Dalton |

I am devastated to hear of Mike's passing. I was his first trumpet teacher in the Guilford, CT schools. I remember him coming in with an old unplayable horn that I suggested he make a lamp with. He also studied with me privately and a few short years later I took him to NYC where I was studying with Carmine Caruso. Although his family moved to Cape Girardeau when he was 16, Mike always stayed in touch and I was so proud of his accomplishments. He never stopped thanking me for his earliest inspiration and foundations of playing. Taking him to concerts with Maynard's band set his goal in the eighth grade. And, he DID play in Maynard's band. WOW!!!!
Thank you all who continued to befriend and inspire him. I miss him terribly.
