Today I was blindsided by behavior that was NOT cool.
While working in the shop it's not uncommon for customers to drop by unannounced and I'm fine with that. What I never expected was for one of the visitors to pull out a trumpet from an independent custom trumpet maker that he represents and start pitching it to OUR customers in OUR work space. Never in a million years would I ever think to do such a thing in someone else's place of business! If you want to make arrangements to meet with potential clients please do so on your own time and premises NOT ours. It's astonishing to me that such poor form would be considered acceptable. _________________ James Becker

Major bummer and total lack of professional ethics.
I have had this happen to me a few times by clients in the shop lately as well. I don't know what some people think what's right these days. I pay thousands and thousands of dollars a month just for my rent. The nerve or lack of taste of some folks is mind-boggling. One guy actually said " yeah I know the horn is on consignment here but if you buy it from me directly today we both can save the fee". I was 20 feet away...
Thanks at least for the heads up as I think this same individual wanted to "visit" my shop too.

The problem is I was completely blind sided. We had some activity out front in the showroom and a few of them wanted to come into the work shop to say hello. The representative is a NEC graduate that we've done work for over the years and who's disk we've sold in our store, so what's the harm in saying hello. After a exchanging pleasantries he pulls out one of these custom trumpets and launches into a pitch to our customers right there in our work space! Not wanting to make a scene, they were told we had repair deadlines to meet and were asked to move back to the showroom. It would be a different story if we were a dealer for his products but we're not, they're sold direct and on ebay. This was clearly an abuse of a longtime association and our good will. _________________ James Becker

Just a thought here: Send them an invoice.
They used something of yours that has value. You should get compensated for that.
They might get so annoyed at you that they never come back - I'm guessing that wouldn't bother you so much.

I didn't state my point very weil. My thought was that if this guy is the rep for a builder, the builder might have better business manners and be as upset by this behavior as you were.
I can understand how you were caught off balance in the moment. That is how some people get away with this type of thing. |

Sorry to hear about this. I agree that it wasn't cool at all.
I wonder if you have a sense of whether this person was primarily clueless or devious? In other words, did he have no idea that he was out of line (clueless) or did he fully realize it but was trying to pull a fast one (devious)?
If this happened to me, and I wanted to make sure it won't happen again, I might respond differently depending upon whether I thought the guy was clueless or devious. _________________ Bb Yamaha Xeno 8335IIS

I run an RV dealership, it's not uncommon to have service customers bring their RVs in for nickel and dime repairs, with For Sale signs all over the coaches, and then leave them on our lot for weeks after repairs are completed.I started instructing the service staff to remove the signs, only to get a very snarky "How dare you!" phone call from one of the customers. I politely told him if he wished to share my expenses for taxes, mortgage and insurance I am sure we could work out a deal for a consignment fee. He picked it up next day.
