So tell me, would you trust the claim that "This is the quality of Monette" from someone who doesn't know the difference between a cornet and a trumpet?

Not to mention that this is the first time I've ever read of an 1890s vintage cornet being compared to a Monette in any context...

One good thing about the auction though, since the horn is dated, it provides a hard data point (1893 - 8254) for a J.W. Pepper serial number list, which I've not found online.

Attractive horn? Quite. Monette? I don't think so.
