Hello All!

What do you guys use for slide grease. My stuff becomes too thin and the tuning slide moves when the horn is on my stand. this is really annoying. I need a more viscous slide grease. Its going in a Strad, so I need the good stuff...thanks for your help!

I use Schilke slide grease on the main slide and 2d slide. On the 1st and 3d slides I use Giardinelli's trombone slide lubricant.

I use petroleum jelly on all slides and also a first drops of oil on first and third to give it a little more speed.

Try using straight lanolin on the tuning slide. It will be way to thick for your 1 &3 slides.

STP Oil Treatment.

No joke.

Straight on the tuning slide, cut with a little valve oil on the first and third valve slides. Best stuff I've ever used.

Which STP do you use? There are a lot of STP additives on the market.

On my main tuning and 2nd valve slides I use Schilke slide grease......on my 1st and 3rd I use Selmer tuning slide grease (red grease comes in a white bottle)...apply that with a drop of valve oil...works wonders

Just the plain old "original" STP OIL Treatment, not the gas treatment or any of the other multitude of products STP now makes. Comes in a blue plastic bottle.

It is not the fastest thing out there, which is why I liberally cut it with valve oil on the one and three valve slides. But it is just fine for the tuning slide straight out of the bottle. The best thing about it (besides being incredibly cheap - one bottle will last for years) is that it prevents slides from becoming frozen even on horns locked away in cases for months at a time.

Schilke is good stuff. I changed to Hetman a couple of years ago. The slide grease is a little tackier then Schilke's. I use Hetman slide oil on the first & third slides.

Main Tuning Slide - Dillon Music Tuning Slide Grease...it's pretty much straight lanolin .
1st and 3rd Valve Slide - Superslick with a drop of valve oil for an extra kick.

The Schilke grease some of you mention is actually only Anhydrous Lanolin (sp) with a Schilke lable on it. It does however work great and many players have used it for years. You can get it in up to 5-lbs tubs at some pharmacies (usually by special order) for dirt cheap. It can even be used on the trigger slides when cut with a little valve oil. The only down side to it though is that it tends to melt and migrate into the valve casing eventually. I highly discourage the use of Vaseline on any brass slides for too many reasons to mention, it's just a BAD idea. Actually, the BEST solution to the problem of a "creeping slide" has been solved by Musichem with a new ultra-heavy grease. Please see the link below and scroll to the bottom for more information.
