In addition to the one word answer there are a few pointers that I will add about finding the teacher, hopefully someone else will add a few others.
1 Don't be afraid to shop around, a good teacher will recognise that a "few trial" lessons are the best way to prove they are good. They will also be happy to put you in contact with other students.
2 Ask around, talk to your band director and other trumpet players you like the sound of.
3 Listen to as much trumpet music as you can, what sort of sound do you aspire to? thats not to say you should aim to be a clone of someone else but the trumpet is a very versatile instrument and should become an extension of your individual inner voice. A good teacher will also aim to help you develop your own voice, yes there is a lot of technical stuff to learn but that is all about developing to apoint were you have the skill to make the horn sing the way you want it to. I'd also say that the right techer for you is someone who makes you think wow when they play, and because they are putting soul into their playing rather than sounding like a trumpet playing machine.
4 Get a teacher who respects the style of music you most want to play, even if they don't specialise in that themselves, they will also know when it's time to move you on or suggest you also have a few lessons with someone else.
5 Before you start work out how much time you will realisically be able to practice in a week and be upfront with the teacher about that. A good teacher will see you as an individual and plan your lessons to meet your needs.
6 Learning to sing and play the piano, even badly, are also good skills to have. Once you get past the basics it might be better to get a different teacher for music theory when you have to learn it in a formal way.
7 I'd say it is better to have one lesson a month, or shorter lessons with a realy good teacher who is right for you and charges more, than weekly lessons with a jobsworth.
Hope that helps

Good advice.
The trumpet can be a very frustrating instrument to learn, but if you stick with it, it's very rewarding, and a lot of fun.
Hope you enjoy playing as much as I have! |
