Does anyone have experience with this instrument? Can anyone offer comparisons to the Conn V1C? _________________ Earl

I have a Kanstul 1510, I bought this C trumpet almost 1 year ago. I've been
very happy with it. I had a bit of a tough choice between the 1510 and the
1510A. In a nutshell, the 1510A has excellent intonation, but pays for this with
a somewhat less exciting sound. The 1510 has a gorgeous sound, and I think,
a wide tonal palette (from clear-crisp-bright to dark-singing). But the
compromise is that the intonation is very good, not quite as amazing as the A.
One year out, I don't notice the intonation anymore. I guess I've adjusted.
The copper bell on the 1510 really looks great-- I get compliments on it all the time.
I have not tried a Conn V1C, only a couple of V1 Bb's in the same store. I thought
there were enough inconsistencies between the two that I would not recommend
buying Conn without trying (a wise policy in any case). On the other hand, Kanstul has
a reputation for consistent high quality, and I would be confident to order a
Kanstul through the mail.
As a disclaimer, I am not a "professional" player. I am a serious amateur, so
take my opinions for whatever you think they are worth. I play in a community
orchestra and a small brass ensemble. When we did Bolero last month, the section
was Monette, Bach, and Kanstul. The principal who plays an early model Monette
told me I had a nice sound.

Thanks I just brought home a 1510a and a V1C and will spend the next few days auditioning them. I am dealing with the Dick Akright Music Center in Washington. I played several V1's in the shop as well as a few Bach's. I tried 3 or 4 different V1's. You are right about V1 inconsistancies. At first glance they are not as well thought out as the Kanstul ... the 1st valve stop on the Kanstul comes to mind. The first time I moved the slide on the V1 it came off on my thumb. I've a few days to audition both horns so time and the tuner will tell. |
