Why do people put the last 2 sometimes three digits as 'x'? It's not like credit card numbers or anything, they could be 'used' against you as far as I can tell. Is it just paranoia?

People have their reasons, but I do it because I usually cannot remember all the numbers. I am doing good to get close to the nearest thousand.

Not sure myself ... I just kind of went along with the crowd on that one. I guess it could prevent someone from trying to sell a horn with that exact serial # (fraud auction).
Other than that I really don't know ... privacy reasons I suppose. I think it's related to the reason why they blurr license plate numbers on television.

License plates in theory could be used to look up a lot of information about the person(s) owning the plates. To my knowledge there is no DMI(Dept. of Musical Instuments), I think I'll chalk this one up to paranoia. . .

After watching the Ebay scams reported here, I think it's wise to keep the SN confidential until an auction is succesfully completed. If someone tries to duplicate your auction, they won't know the complete serial number. The partial allows the buyer to determine the manufacture date. I wouldn't send money until I knew the serial number, but I think it's safe to bid.

Yeah, your SN was "harvested" by a web spider that scans the entire web looking for Ambassador SNs. 
Not to belittle you Amb, but your exposure is pretty low. (Your not the guy with the Najoom, scratch-gold, hotrodded Amb. are you?)

Haha my ambassador SN will be the beginnings of a huge global-$100-Ambassador-scam-ring! That Najoom ambassador sounds cool, any links or info? Wow ... sounds like a lot of WORK though. I mean, it would take 30-40 of those auctions to equal one quality scam of a Monette auction ... just doesn't seem cost efficient. I will however utilize your serial number for a Monette auction even though Dave won't reah that number for another 50 years.

Finally my Ambassador is getting the respect it deservesm, clearly it is in the same class as the Monettes and with it's high serial number you can scam . . .err sell it legitimatly as a "Monette so advanced it came from the future! People will be sending you checks non-stop! Good luck with your new "business!"

Yeah, I know.
I suppose a very careful person could doctor the digital pics and obscure the final three numbers.
I have a hard time fully trusting fuzzy pictures. I know that some people don't know how to take quality pictures (it's not easy) BUT scam artists can use it as a way to make defects hard to evaluate. I'd much rather buy from someone with excellent pictures like yours.

| Actually, I'm a photomoron--I had this (inexpensive) digital Olympus for over 2 years before I realized that I could switch it to high-res! It's a 1.1 megapixel camera now available used on Ebay for about 80 bucks in good condition. It's got a setting for close-ups--just point and shoot. So there really is very little excuse for fuzzy, poor pics on auctions, etc. |
