When you get a used trumpet what if anything should be done to clean it and bring it up to playing standards?

Sometimes, depending on who owned it and what condition it is in, you may not have to do anything. However, a lot of times I will give it a good cleaning out and then reoil the valves and regrease the slides. Of course, for cosmetics you can polish the horn. Now, if the horn is really dirty you may want to take it to a repair shop and have them do a chem-clean. They can check the pads and the valve alignment as well. Hopefully, most used horns you buy don't need this done to them.

I would second the advice of giving it a good clean before you play it. A student of mine got herself a second hand tuba (yes, I teach all brass, for my sins!), blew one note on it and got rather a shock when a spider crawled out of the bell!!
Her shock was possibly not as great as the spider's!

Some people are very good at cleaning instruments when they sell them, others are not quite so wonderful. When I sold a flugel it was in a terrible state, so I knocked a bt off the price for the guy. He took it home, cleaned it properly, polished it and brought it to the rehearsal the next week - I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a different instrument!!
He also makes it sound better than I ever did, sometimes selling to students is very depressing!

If you buy used of off Dillon Music they will fully service any used horn before you purchase it.
