The zinger is a fabulous harmon. I'll be surprised if you don't like it when it arrives. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Is the Zinger that much better than the original Harmon? I don't use one that often.
Also! I put my H&B into my newly-restored 400 cornet and it balances pretty well. I could play it with the cornet and not spend any more money.
$31 for a Harmon B or $85 for a Zinger....
Still unsure.

It's plays quite well in tune, which is a nice change, but it's not heavy like a Joral, and perhaps best of all, you don't need to mic it to be heard playing it in a big band setting. It's possible to get quite loud on it (stem removed, of course) without working too hard. Well worth the expense, imo. You also don't need to do open heart surgery on it (as Bobby Shew recommends for a typical bubble style harmon) to get it to sound good either. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

The Harmon B is worth about $3, IMO. They are total garbage. Charles Davis aluminum is cheaper than the Zinger...... _________________ Eric Sperry

I have an old copper Harmon, a copper joral, and a trumcor zinger. The zinger plays the best in tune of the lot by far, is lightweight and puts out the most sound. I usually don't quibble about mute prices because it's what I do for a living and want the best result. The copper joral is one of the old ones and weighs a ton. I like it fine. The copper Harmon is my favorite sounding mute but you really have to pull your slide out and it's stuffy. So as far as performance i would rate them zinger, joral, copper Harmon. In terms of sound I would probably rate them Harmon, joral, trumcor |

Charley Davis copper for me. Heavy but best buzz and intonation and I've tried various generations of Harmon and Jo-Ral. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Hi
I have a Denis Wick ET mute as well as a JoRal Aluminum bubble. I largely agree with TKSop regarding the Denis Wick, although for some reason I prefer it on cornet rather than trumpet. I've never been happy with the Denis Wick on trumpet for big band/Jazz. It is relatively small and light but doesn't have a particularly nice or characteristic harmon mute sound on trumpet in my opinion. I've relegated it to my brass band cornet accessory bag, and it seems to for some reason to work pretty well on cornet in a brass band setting, and give an appropriate enough sound. I haven't really given it much thought, but the Denis Wick probably sounds a bit tinny, which isn't as apparent on cornet.
Anyway to get to the point, the Denis Wick probably won't be the OP's preferred choice of sound, but is pretty small and light, and has straight sides.
Take Care
Lou
I recall weighing all the ones I had a while ago for a thread, done a quick google to find it for you (though obviously the copper Harmon brand and the bubble aren't relevant):
(WoS= without stem, WS = with stem)
- H&B wawah du all - 165.8g WS - 130.5g WoS
- H&B wawah du all (with all paint removed) - 146.2g WS - 114.8g WoS
- JoRal copper bubble - 193.1g WS - 157.7g WoS
- Harmon brand copper - 164.2g WS - 134.8g WoS
- Denis Wick - 86.6g WS - 68.5g WoS
What's interesting is just how much weight in the H&B is down to paint - though I think the biggest problem is that it's very bottom-heavy, so it *feels* heavier than it is either way. |

The Protec Liberty harmon arrives and I am quite impressed. It has a good buzz to it and low volume and down to about low Bb or so. Below that, no good, fine with me. It is much lighter than the Humes and Berg (hard to be heavier!) and it has a decent price.
So for as litttle as I play a harmon, I'm happy with it. No regrets at all.
Thank you all for your recommendations, even if I didn't follow any!

Of the wah-wah mutes I've owned and used, one of my favorites was an Emo that I picked up from WWBW on a scratch-n-dent deal for cheap. I got that because I had just started playing with a big band, and I needed to get a bunch of different mutes in a hurry, and it was the cheapest way to go. I got that and a brand new Tom Crown straight, both scratch-n-dent, for way cheap. The kicker was I had no clue why they were sold as scratch-n-dent - they looked fine to me. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Thanks Eric.
Does anyone have a recording of this Charles Davis wah-wah mute? I would love to hear what it sounds like. Thanks _________________ Justin Dickson

For me the Best Brass is the way to go. they are a little pricey but worth it. I have both the aluminum and the brass models. It is the most in tune, has the best response over the whole range of the horn, and great sound.
I do like the zinger as well. They are getting more and more popular here in SF. _________________ Justin J. Smith |
