I posted this on 2 other forums here....
I've been a professional trumpet player going on 14 years and recently got some drastic but necessary dental work that has all but ended my ability to play. I haven't taken lessons since I was in college, but practicing on my own has only led to frustration. Who in Los Angeles would be BEST to turn to? Is there an expert that can save my career, someone who has proven to be the best in the field of reconstructing an embouchure, or is all hope lost? |

Is Mario back in Los Angeles? Last I'd heard he moved to the Bay Area. Boyde Hood is someone who really knows about embouchures. In addition to this, his teaching style is one of extreme patience and his coaching ability is phenomenal. I'm not sure if he is taking on any new students, but you could always try. _________________

he doesent live in LA, but go and see Jerome Callet. He lives in New York and his website is http://www.callet.com where you can get his phone number and more information about his method.
jerome teaches a technique that uses the toungue to create air pressure against the edges of the front teeth. this means that no pressure needs to be applied to the mouthpiece as one ascends into the high register of the instrument.
callet told me that he has crooked teeth and they made it impossible for him to play in the upper register of the instrument. he had the best teachers but they could not help him. he's spent something like 40 years studying embouchure techniques i think, and his approach is scientific. his method will work perfectly regardless of the shape of your face and teeth. i can play with the mouthpiece anywhere on my lips, even close to the corners when using his technique. i assume you still have front teeth?
i started using this method properly 2 days ago and got results instantly. it may take you a while to understand how to use it properly. the method does not just improve your range it improves your sound, and endurance as well.
i know it's far from LA to New York, but it's worth it. jerome can also teach you over the phone.
hope you get it sorted. god bless |

I wouldn't trust anyone who is happy to teach over the phone!
Wayne Bergeron said once that Boyde Hood helped him out after he'd had dental work.

Sorry if you don't know who Mr Clean is. Mr Clean is the TH username for the most recent addition to the LA Phil Trumpet Section, Jim Wilt. I've had the good fortune to take a few lessons with him over the years, and he is one the best out there.

From his posts on TH, Mr Clean sounds like the right sort of guy for a lesson - very methodical in his approach (well, to get to that level I suppose he would have to be!).
I would add my concerns over the possibility of lessons over the phone, even having had one myself which was excellent (not from Mr Callet, from someone giving me a natural trumpet lesson over the phone - highly amusing!!). The reason I wouldn't recommend one is that you asked for an embouchure specialist - how can anyone attempt to talk about your embouchure when all they know of you is your voice? |

To who mentioned Roy Poper
^Yeah, he is a very excellent player and a good teacher. I had a lesson with him about two months ago.
Mr. Clean definitely would be a good person to take a lesson with.
Charley Davis...Is this the former Buddy Rich lead player? What are his lessons like? |

I was out in LA this summer and took from a few people that include Charley Davis, Uan Reece (spelling?) and Howie Shear.
I really enjoyed all of them, but the main thing that I noticed was that it really depends on what you need as a player.
Davis was a Bill Adams student so he teaches mostly out of that method.
Reece was mostly on Clarke, and Schlossberg.
Howie was a student of Carmine Caruso, so he was a great teacher as far as that method. He also hangs around at Bob Reeves shop in Valencia, so you could go there to kill two birds with one stone.
Hope this helps,
Josh |

Hey Greg, It's Joe Harris. You should really hook up with Boyd Hood from LA Phil, he's also at USC. How have you been.
