I knew immediately when this horn was posted what it was (well, except that I didn't know it was large bore). I could tell it was a Committee.
I think this shows it's a good idea IF you do know what the horn is, to NOT contact the seller asking "Does it say Committee, blah, blah, blah,...?" for the very reason the seller may update the description (thus alerting every other potential eBay bidder, which in this case, the seller did).
If you just go ahead and take your chances (you know, do make sure to do your homework first, though) you'll probably come out ahead. But for chrisake, don't alert the seller with too much useful info!!!
I once bought a large bore Committee for under $6 once at a flea market. Sold it on eBay for over $1200. Bought a Selmer bass clarinet for next to nothing, overhauled it myself and sold for over $2000. Good deals CAN be had, but a lot of it's in the way you approach the seller - and you don't have to be dishonest either.

Yes, it is a large bore, but it is significantly newer than the ones most people think of when you say "Committee". Generally, up to about 200,000 serial number are considered the "good ones". This is in the 700,000's. So, in this case, it would be important for me to know what the serial number so I could bid intelligently. I don't agee that you shouldn't ask questions for fear of giving information away.

I agree, but I believe the seller is mistaken with the serial number. The horn is described as being made in Elkhart. My newer (1990's) Martin is in the 800,000's. Since the 70's, the Committee has been made in Kenosha by Leblanc/Holton. I'm thinking the seller sees the first digit as "7" when it's actually "1". Who knows, though......

I agree with the poster and so did W.C. Fields, who said, "never smarten up a chump." No telling where the seller got the horn. Could have bought it from some old widow for $5.00. Then with out doing any research at all puts it on ebay and starts out at $55. Original owners will tell what they know about horns. Garage sale Sh-- pickers will just buy the old shinies and try to turn a quick profit. Look how many student horns open on ebay for $400, with the sales pitch being that they sell new for $800. |

"What do you figure it's worth?"
If it is indeed an Elkhart #3 large bore Martin (which I think it is), I would guess a minimum of $1000, and that's taking into consideration the few problems it has. Just a guess though.

I own an identical Committee, #704XXX, but is stamped "L" instead of "3", with a first valve trigger. It is indeed worth at least $1000, at least in my opinion. _________________ Trumpet: 1975 Benge CG, 1964 Martin Committee

Adieste,
Was your 7xxxxx made in Elkhart? (Dave M suggested that the seller may have misread the first digit 1 as a 7)
Thanks,
Jeff |

Good to know. I'm really rusty on my Martin serial numbers.

I have the impression there is a lot of trouble with that horn for the new owner.
Missing front brace, lead pipe too near by the bell. What does it look like inside ?
I also think that the Committees were VERY inconsistent, VERY !!
I once owned a good one but I played three or four horrible ones.
So, letīs stay calm and wait until it will be sold again at ebay. |

I'm sure you must be talking about the horn mentioned by the original poster. The horn currently for sale on eBay has both braces intact, is clean inside and out, and has the assurances of its condition by the seller ( an honest professional trumpet player _________________ Trumpet: 1975 Benge CG, 1964 Martin Committee

Wow, adieste, that's some horn. I take it compression is good...? I wish I could afford a beauty like that. Or more aptly, I wish I could try out a horn like that to see if it's right for me to spend my ca$h on... |

I'm not a horn expert, but there is definite pop to the valves, and Flip Oakes did a quick check on it recently when I had by Benge valves aligned. He gave it a passing grade.
Too bad you're way on the other side, otherwise I'd be happy to let you take it for a spin around the block!
Looks like my eBay reserve has been met, so somebody definitely has a date for the Valentines Day party this year! _________________ Trumpet: 1975 Benge CG, 1964 Martin Committee

Not about the second Committee. |

Thanks for that clarification. I'd hate to establisha bad reputation on TH, as I've become a bit of a fan, and certainly appreciate all of the free expert advice given here!
By the way guys and gals, the auction ends on Wednaesday. Interestingly, the current bid price is what I had originally posted in the Marketplace...oh well. ( Maybe somebody will up the ante So much for shameless self-promotion. _________________ Trumpet: 1975 Benge CG, 1964 Martin Committee
