Hmmmm I'd kinda want the Benge bath towels. I'd bid on those I think.
There are a bunch of clean CGs on Ebay right now. And a couple weeks ago at Dillons I saw they had like four (one very special) CGs.
When did Zig Kanstul leave Benge? Was it 1980? I read an article somewhere he got the French Besson contract sometime before Benge left California, and I thought there was a year or two Benge operated in Anaheim with out Kanstul. Maybe I'm wrong.
The last few years of LA Benge trumpets were hit and miss quality wise. I've had a few horns marked MLP that when measured were really MLs, and seen some others with quality control and finish issues compared to the uniformly excellent horns from the early 70s and Burbank period. |

According to this article, Kanstul Musical Instruments opened in late 1981:
http://www.kanstul.com/kanstulStory.php?metaPage=KanstulStory
Zig Kanstul probably left sometime between mid 1981 and "late" 1981.
Just a guess.
I would love to find a set of concave buttons, but I have a silver plated LA Benge CG. If anybody has a set they are looking to part with please let me know! _________________ For Online Lessons via Live Video, email

I've got the concave buttons on the CG Benge Claude ordered for me in 1980. My Burbank Benge also has concave buttons, though they are a little thinner. I'm pretty sure concaves can be ordered from Kanstul that would work just fine. |

I just ordered concave finger buttons from sales@kanstul .
Just shy of $50 for a set including silver plating plus shipping.
I was assured that if they don't fit for some reason, that I could return them and get a refund.
I was also told they don't have very many sets left in stock.
I will follow up when I receive them regarding fit with my Benge CG.
They don't stock above mentioned towels and Jammies _________________ For Online Lessons via Live Video, email

I'd love to see a picture of the concave vs "non-concave" side by side. I cannot really see much in the original Eric picture o fhis CG. Also, what's the advantage of concave? |

For what it is worth, here's my opinion...
There is no real advantage or disadvantage to concave or flat buttons (or convex ones, for that matter). It is strictly a matter of personal preference.
My first trumpet was a Conn with concave buttons. I became accustomed to that feel. When I got my Bach Strad, it didn't have concave buttons so it felt different and I didn't like it. Then, over the years I got used to the feel of the Bach an no longer liked the feel of concave finger buttons.
Recently I purchased a B&S flugelehorn and it came with concave buttons like those on my first Conn trumpet - and now I don't like the feel. I want all of my horns to have the same, or similar feel in the hand. So, I have been hunting for a new set of finger buttons for my B&S flugelhorn. When I finally find some, I'll replace the mother-of-pearl with inserts that feel like those on my Bach.
I've heard some opine that concave finger buttons promote centering the fingers on the buttons and thus the habit of pushing the valves straight down into the pistons as opposed to flat or convex buttons where you are more apt to contact the buttons off-center and so push the valves from the side, off-axis. Obviously, I'm not sold on the idea for myself. Maybe if I were having trouble with sticking valves or worn pistons I would change my mind.
Warm regards,

In the late '30s, Buescher was promoting the convex finger buttons for the same reason, forces you to press the valve down straight. As they were not produced after the war, I have to believe that people didn't like them or they were too expensive to produce.
I can play them, it's no big deal.

I just got a set of concave silver buttons in a lot I purchased, they're marked for a 65B Benge, but look just like this. (The part number on the bag was P50-SP4015-2.) Currently I have them on a Cleveland Superior (H.N. White) that somebody stole two buttons off of, they seem to fit well enough. |
