I have this 1957 horn and want to refurbish it. It is two tone color - silver and brass. Are the silver parts likely to be silver plate or nickel plateing. How can I tell the difference?

The silver bits are "nickel silver" -- an alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc. It's ususual to have a mix of brass and silver plate on a horn because brass needs to be lacquered to keep from tarnishing, but lacquer doesn't adhere to silver very well.

The Olds catalogs one can find at Alan Rouse's "Olds Central" website (http://rouses.net/trumpet/olds57/page10.htm points directly to the '57 Super page) specifically mention the Super having nickel silver components.

Terrance,

I would also suggest that you send it to Kanstul Musical Instruments in Anaheim to get it refurbished. Zig Kanstul was in charge of operations for Olds for years and knows the horns. Also, their prices are very reasonable.

Terrance, I have 3 Olds horns that were overhauled by Borodi Music near Cleveland. They do most of the work for Alaska Pro Brass, if you ever seen their horns on eBay. Here is and example http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3701404471&category=16214&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

They were easy to work with, fast turnaround, excellent price ($200US!). I'd recommend them.

I would like to second the opinion regarding Borodi Music. I just received an LA Olds cornet back from a complete overhaul. Wonderful work, the horn looks brand new and plays beautifully. I had some valve work done on it so the total nut with shipping was US$250. Well spent by another happy Canuck from Swift Current.

I own a 1957 Olds Studio will drop it off with Steve Winans aka Dr. Valve http://www.doctorvalve.com tomorrow for complete restoration and valve job. Depending on where you live, there are some great technicians out there.

A couple of others:
