Hi all.
I'm planning to visit S.F. or L.A. in early Dec. for a few nights after my business travel in Nevada. Which places would you recommend between S.F. and L.A.? I'd like to visit used trumpet shops and jazz live venues.

I'm from Asia and I've been to S.F. twice and L.A once, but at that time I was not into trumpet really (just hang around famous places, and actually went to the jazz performance in early 2000 in SF. Not that I remember of the place now though). It's very difficult to assess which place would be better from web search (and TH search). FYI, I'm not planning to rent a car at the moment, but if that's worthwhile, I'll do for some time during the stay. I'd appreciate any tips and guides. Thanks.

For instruments:

Hornucopia in San Carlos on the SF peninsula has a lot of used instruments. It is within walking distance of the CalTrain.

A & G Music in Oakland.

Bronstein Music in South San Francisco.

Peninsula Music in Palo Alto or Park Avenue Music in San Jose. (Sister sites)

I am not sure what each of these stores have in stock. It has been a while since I have visited them.

As far as getting around, I've been to both cities multiple times and the public transportation in both cities is good.
