I have a question for those of you who are fimilar with the Bennett Rose Variations. Bar 173 has a trill on 4th space E marked with a flat after the trill mark. (tr b) What does this mean? An E to F-flat trill?

John,
I had a student play this last semester and I think that I remember noticing that glitch. I told him to just play a half step trill (E to F) since that goes with the harmony at that point. I'm telling you this based purely on memory, so I hope I'm remembering it correctly.
I bet what happened was in Bennett's manuscript - where he probably wrote in concert pitch - he had D to Eb intended as the trill and included the flat sign in parentheses which was then copied mistakenly into the transposed part. Just a guess, but I think it's plausible.
Great solo! Have fun.
Bob
