Hello trumpet friends. After three years of work and planning, finally happy to announce the release of a lifelong dream recording. Haydn, Hummel, Albinoni Op. 7. No.3, Hertel #1 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Pinchas Zukerman. Steven Epstein (Wynton's long time producer) and Richard King were producer and engineer. They have 30 Grammy's between them and although that was NOT the motivation for doing this session, I think you can also understand why I am especially proud to announce this legacy recording since there was a dream team right where you want them...on the podium and behind the glass!
The conducting work of a musical giant like Pinchas Zukerman (see video clip below) who has seen and done it all in the classical industry is also indicative of how much enjoyment I had putting this together. He really conducts more like a jazz band leader who stays out of the way until absolutely necessary and the orchestra musicians loved him for it and played with the utmost professionalism and respect...it was a fantastic thing to witness!
The Haydn is the foundation for everything we do on modern trumpet today and it has taken me this long to feel comfortable actually making a permanent statement in the form of a recording. Those of you who are teachers and have extolled the virtues of playing this work with grace, elegance and maturity while looking at students who are scratching their heads (including me back-in-the-day with the voice of James Thompson ringing loudly in my ear) will understand why this piece (as well as the Hummel) deserves all of the respect that it often does not receive.

In the next week or so I will be providing more detailed information about the recording (available now) and video which will come out in the new year.
Of greatest interest to this forum though will be discussion about the very special E flat that was built for me as well as the work I did with Yamaha on the rotary piccolo trumpet that was also used. More on that soon as well.
Hope you all enjoy the rollout of this project that I have dreamed of doing since I was 17...and in all honesty, I'm glad I waited!!!

Wow, what a great sound on picc! I'm inclined to think it has more to do with the player than anything else, but the rotary has me wondering. Also, do I recognize that as a Pickett mpc?
The entire signal path certainly contributes to the sound, as does your sound engineer. He doesn't execute those flawless trills though! Wow. |
