I own an Olds Mendez. It's a great horn with a very solid feel. The slotting is exceptional, it really locks in. It's the best slotting horn I own.
I haven't played a French Besson Brevette so I can't comment on that model. I have a French Besson Meha (94XXX), however, and there are some similarities between the feel of the Meha and the feel of the Mendez. Both have excellent intonation and slotting. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

In my estimation, the French Besson is a lighter weight horn. It seems to "come alive" in your hands, much like the Getzen Severinsen Eternas. The Olds Mendez is heavier, with a sound that is not as bright as the French Besson. Also, the Olds Mendez has a shorter valve throw than the French Besson. |

Thanks for posting your comments, both of you.
I'm guessing (?) you had the Mendez trumpet, correct?
I briefly tried the cornet version. Really liked it ... fine slotting, as you indicated.
However; I kept going back to my Conn Connstellation 28A, which is the long cornet model ... and, it seemed to do everything the Mendez did ... and, more. Mainly, projection ... which is important to me, when playing "Taps" at veteran's memorial services (I'm in B.B.A.). It's the "Swiss Army Knife" of horns. It smokes most trumpets, hands down. The fact that it takes cornet mouthpieces is a huge plus.
I'm the guy that's been quoted here on the forum, for remarking that one could cover almost everything imaginable, sonically ... with two horns: A Conn 28A and a Martin Committee.
In-any-event, I liked the Mendez a great deal. It was almost cost twice as much as my Conn 28A ... so, I reluctantly, but wisely opted to choose the 28A.
