I was wondering if anyone might have some recommendations for a challenging but playable solo for a 9th grade trumpet student.
I believe at last year's contest she played one in the Vandercook series...maybe Antares, Arcturus, Cygnus, or etc..
This year we are looking for something slightly more challenging...but preferably something that doesn't stray above a written G (top of the staff) or maybe the A a step above. The solo does not have to be on any particular required list.
On this subject...are there any sheet music websites that give you a visual preview of solos, or at least list the range of the piece?
Many thanks for your help.

The ITG Youth web site has a solos page. It's not a complete resource, yet, by any means, but there are several pieces listed and reviewed there.. all have the range listed.

Best of luck!

If double tounging isn't a problem, try teh Goedicke Concert etude. if it IS, then don't. I remember being a 9th grade student who had trouble finding solos that stayed below G or A. There are a good ones out there so don't worry:) _________________ "So long, and thanks for all the fish!" -- Dolphins |

Thanks for the tip. The Concert Etude is a nice chart. We might suggest that one for her in a year or so...once the multiple tonguing settles in some. Thanks again! |

I played Balay's Petite Piece Concertante in 9th grade for the Solo and Ensemble Contest - it went very well.
It is within your range - and no multiple tonguing. I recommend you check it out. |

Yes, I think I remember that one. A local college instructor also suggested it recently. Thanks, DaveH! We'll add it to the list. |

I have done arrangements of the J.F. Haydn, Michael Haydn, and J.N. Hummel trumpet concertos with the younger student in mind. They each come with an accompaniment CD for practicing, as well as the solo trumpet and piano parts. Definitely more challenging than Vandercook, but without the original pieces' rtange issues. _________________ Dr. Michael Stewart

This might sound a bit obvious to many of you, but I have no idea how old a 9th grade student is.
I have looked at this thread and been tempted to post, but without knowing what sort of age I am supposed to be recommending for, it is a bit tricky.
Before anybody says how obvious it is - I am in the UK - how should I know what age a 9th grade student is?
I have a few suggestions, I just want to be sure that they will be appropriate
Cheers for the info |

Thanks for the replies, Stewmuse and trumpetmike. The student is around 14 years old. I think she started playing 3 years ago. |
