Kanstul Flugels - looking for reviews

Hey y'all,

I have the opportunity to test drive both the Kanstul CHF 1025 and the ZKF 1525...I have the Chicago model right now, and will play it on tonight's gig. I'm getting the 1525 next week.

Have you played either of these horns? Maybe both? Any observations you'd care to share concerning tone, intonation, quality of workmanship, etc?

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

I play on a ZKT1525 which I bought in Dillons last year. I just love playing this horn. When I started playing it for the first time I felt a massive change in my Flugel sound from a a very middle of he road sound to a wonderful warm dark tone, just what I wanted to hear out of the horn. My opinion has not changed since that first play. Crsftsmanship is excellent and the intonation is very good.

The 1525 may be the best playing flugelhorn made today. It has such a wonderful sound and response that it is a joy to play. The intonation on it is very good as well. I've played it and compared agains't the Chicago, LeBlanc SandovalModel, Courtois and Bobby Shew Yamaha model and in each instance there was no contest. The 1525 was the best horn. I know somewhere there may be a better flugelhorn made today but I haven't played it. The other thing is that the 1525 seems to hold its value real well.

The only other Flugelhorns that I would like to try and that might give the 1525 a run for its money would be an old Couesnon, a Hub Van Larr - played by George Graham, a Callet Flugelhorn and a Wildthing flugelhorn. Of course the Wildthing and Callets are made by Kanstul as well.

I've owned both models. The "Chicago" was terrible....VERY stuffy, bad intonation, no upper register, mediocre flugel sound, AND awkward to hold. After a couple of years playing the 1525 I wouldn't trade it for any other flugel...period!!! Maybe I just got a bad "Chicago" but it was the best of the two I had tried at the time.

I think there are some slight design differences and tweaking done. The Wildthing Cornet is also made by Kanstul.
