Hi, in 3 weeks, i,ll be starting to try some horn in order to buy a new one in beggining of april. I'll have a good money entrance at the end of march (well... not that big, but enough for a good used horn). I'd like to buy a trumpet to play jazz, but I don't want a jAzz trumpet... I still want to play other thing and having a proper sound.
I'm softly starting a Dixieland band (got the trombone, trumpet "me) and a piano... for now... ) I'm looking for more player and in a couple of month, we will propably be starting to pratice a couple of song. Eventually, I'll also be writing song... as soon as i'll get more theory in my head! So I want somethign that will sound good in a Dixie band... But I'll still continu to be brass instructor in a air cadet band and I wan't to be able to continue to play with them with a decent legit sound in order to give them an exemple of what they soundsound like and help them to follow the beat.
So I can do a part of the job about changing the type of the sound comming out of the bell... but I got my limit....
So, I'd like to have name of good horn for Jazz playing that don't have an extreme Jazz song...

Yes!
A top-flight, vintage cornet could be bought for less than a mediocre used trumpet . . . and the sound and the LOOK would be more authentic!
Everyone deserves a great cornet, and there are tons of them coming out of attics each day!

Because I have already lot of equipment for trumpet and I don't want them to be useless. I may get a cornet or flugel in a couple of years, when I'll have more money. For now, I want a semi-pro trumpet or somethign liek that. I have a student model and as I said... I'll still do other stuff with the trumpet. So maybe a cornet is a good Idea for in a few years, when we will actually be doing Gig... but for now, i'm just looking for a trumpet. The Dixieland band is just an idea for the moment...It wil probably work, but no certitude...
But is there any trumpet that got great sound for Dixies?

I'm not sure yet, but will be more Jazz than legit. Neither Latin and Baroque is in my project. So Mainly Jazz, but with some legti playing too, I may join an harmony or somethign liek that to play some classic or movie music too...
I tought maybe of a F. Beson Meha? any comment or other suggestion? _________________ Nicolas Marcotte

I wouldn't worry so much about any brand name,,its really going to be up you to get that Jazz sound,,maybe you just need to buy more CD's so you can really get that sound in your head. _________________ Playing music is better than playing notes!

A Strad with a 43 bell is a great all-around horn. I've used mine in lots of classical, jazz, and commerical settings, and it performs well in all of them. You can probably find a decent used one somewhere on the internet.
Don't use a horn as a cure-all to sound, though....the poster above is right, the jazz sound is how you make it sound. A horn won't give you a sound, but it will aid you in creating it. Just some thoughts....have fun with that Dixie combo!

And once you get that sound that you want, try to imitate the sound, use it as a foundation and find your signature sound. And a Bach Strad will be a good horn for you to start with. _________________ Playing music is better than playing notes!

As everyone says, what is best for you may not match others. I tried a Shilke today for possible purchase and it wasn't as flexible, free blowing nor did it have the range of the Getzen Eterna Severinsen I usually blow. It was a good horn, but the deciding factor was the valves- no where near as light and smooth as the Eterna Severinsen. But thats just me- some one else may have exactly the opposite feelings. But a good used Severinsen would run usually $400- $500 on Ebay and are usually being advertised. What I would like to try is the Conn Vintage One with the short throw valve system, but there are'nt any for sale at much less that the new price. |

Duty calls, and I feel compelled to call your attention to the Olds line of instruments. Some of the best trumpets and cornets ever made in my opinion, and available for far less than some of the trendy brands. Go to eBay and spend a couple weeks searching for Olds.
The Ambassador and Special are both solid "student" models that can be had quite cheaply. The Studio is the intermediate line, but compares with some of the best pro trumpets ever made in my opinion. The Recording, Super, and Mendez are their pro models that many trumpet players (including myself) regard as top-of-the-line. The Opera, not as commonly seen on eBay, is a large bore symphonic model that most trumpet players find to be too large to be practical.
My #1 trumpet is a three-way tie between a 1940 Olds Super, a 1963 Mendez and a 1964 Recording. My #1 cornet is a 1953 Recording. I'm currently selling off all my other horns, and my wife is very happy with this news. (So am I, actually.)

P.S. Don't underestimate Reynolds trumpets & cornets, either! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |
