|
|
Hey!
Recently I became aware of the Caruso method and ordered the book "Musical Calisthenics For Brass".
I read it and tried both the six notes and Exercise 2 (intervals in 2nds).
Now I got a question about Exercise 2:
Does the first note of every slur have to be tongued or does the first note have to be played with breath attack so that there is no tongue at all in this exercise?
Thanks for your help and kind regards,
Simon |

I would whatever is comfortable for you! You may find initially that it will be more comfortable tonguing or using the breath attack.
As long as you're playing within the 4 rules and doing the exercise, you should be getting what's intended _________________ More than one trumpet

If you think you're having trouble with attacks then you could use breath attacks and no tongue on the intervals.
Carmine's reasoning was:
Good functioning and responsive lips are the basis of good attacks,
The lips will find this responsiveness quicker by practicing breath attacks,
Therefore, breath attacks could be assigned on the intervals to expedite overall lip improvement.
Same thing for the 6 Notes.
Be sure the attacks, breath or tongue, are exactly in time with your foot tapping. |

Carmine had me always use the tongue to start the intervals but I witnessed him direct many other students to begin with the breath. Nothing wrong with doing it both ways.

This was always personalized for each player. During my lessons, we always tongued the first not on these studies. In the last several years, I have begun to use breath attacks. Try it both ways and see which helps you more.
Most importantly, follow the Four Rules at all times during calisthenic practice. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

I took lessons with Carmine and later with Laurie Frink. They both always had me use breath attacks. _________________ Tom Barreca |

I was taught to tongue them. During numerous comebacks I tried a breath attach and had a hard time on the higher notes. The tongue does kick start things. Maybe not ideally but it does!
Best of luck,
