I am wondering if it is normal for lips to be able to "fold," and if it affects trumpet playing. I used to "fold" my lips a lot when I was younger (before I played trumpet). The thing is, I noticed that you can see the fold when I am buzzing. So, is this normal (I do not know much about lips)? If not, how does it affect my playing? I know it's probably normal, I'm just paranoid that it's not.

I've never seen anything like that. It's probably best that you just give up on trumpet playing and send me your trumpet(s).

Yes, that was a joke.

Now seriously, forget about what your lips look like or what they can do when you aren't playing. And don't waste time buzzing your lips (unless your goal is to be a lip buzzer). Just practice your trumpet and enjoy doing so.

Best wishes,

I have seen that trait before in brass players whose embouchures I have studied. Best as I can tell, it won't have any appreciable affect on your playing. I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not sure about your lip position while buzzing, though. Unlike John, I recommend and practice free buzzing for a little bit daily, but looking at your photo it doesn't look like you're free buzzing correctly (for I how utilize it).
