Softcase,
What are you auditioning for (Performance, Mus.Ed.,) ??
Where are you auditioning (include order of preference)?

I'm auditioning for performance at (in tentative order of preference): U of Toronto, McGill, U of Calgary, and U of Western Ontario.
I've also decided to add to my audition programme Brandt 9, and some excerpts: petrouchka, pictures, other standard stuff. I figured that i might as well get double mileage out of the stuff i'm preparing for the National Youth Orchestra audition. |

I was going to list my audition pieces, but after looking at the previous posts, you all seem a bit out of my league! My audition peices were nowhere near as advanced as the peices I've seen.
I did have a chance to play the 2nd mvt. from Ewazen's Sonata, and it's a good lyrical peice, with some flexibility technique thrown in.
This brings up a neat question. Check out my post. |

I played Haydn I & II, Prayer of St. Gregory, Pictures, Pines, Leonore Calls 2 & 3, and Petrouska, I auditioned at Indiana, and Eastman, hands down, IU was the place for me. Choose the place where you feel comfortable with the teacher and the environment, I would've been miserable at Eastman because of the atmosphere... jus not the place for me... my .02 cents, go where you feel at home, with the teacher you like the most, with the most supportive environment, theres always someone, somewhere else that can put you in your place playing-wise, but by making great connections and being a nice well mannered person is half of being a great musician and making a career after getting a degree.... I hate playing with guys who feel they have to prove themselves by being jerks, or less than a gentleman/lady.... wow... /rant.....
my 2 cents,
JB |

when was your audition at Indiana? I went there this past weekend. It was rather stressful trying to find a practice room since there were 600 students there. It was also intimidating to hear Hummel 1 (what I was playing) beautifully from another room. As it turns out, though, they were auditioning grad students at the same time. What about IU made you comfortable there? Once I was in the audition I actually calmed down some because all three of the professors were very nice.

I just got back from my Royal College audition. It went ok, apart from bits of the 3rd mvt of the Peeters sonata (argh!) and the sight-reading (which was terrible).
They were very friendly and really put me at ease, which was a relief.

I auditioned at IU two years ago - Im a sophomore - What made the most comfortable was seeing guys hangin on the 3rd floor of the annex laughin havin a good time - i was looking for a competitive environment but not a cut-throat i hate you competition - the nice guys made it the reason i came here... my playing has taken off esp this 2nd year - due to the support of my teachers, and also the friends i made that help me out when im suckin it up in the practice rooms.... hope to see you here next year -- JB! _________________ -*JB*-

hey jack, what ones have you done and whats the last one? what course is it as well?
what did they want you to do at RCM apart from peices? i was up there a few weeks ago watchin a harp sextet and a trumpet recital by lenoard candelaria, they had farmers market there a few weeks ago. (for anyone who doesnt tune into the late junction on radio3 its well worth the time (norwigen rock/bulgarian folk music with a hint of jazz great stuff!))

i usually get really nervous before i audition but, what is helping me at my auditions for graduate schools is remembering that less than 1% of the global population care about this music (jazz or classical), and the performers who i hold in the highest esteem are a bunch of unknowns in most places outside of the few concert halls that haven't been bulldozed yet, and college music buildings (a.k.a. La La Land). remember this .... and the true musician in you will shine. -max-

I've done the RAM and the RCM, Trinity to go. I'm applying for the gap year course - like year 1 only of the BMus.
The RCM asked for sight-reading, no scales, and then talked to me for a bit - they asked what composers I liked etc. |

I finished Peabody monday, and so im all done. all my letters get sent out on tax day:) Great fun. I have to wait until then to find out. I think i did pretty good on both auditions, though my high range suffered both times, though in different ways. Well see if i get in:)
