I don't think Holton makes these anymore, but this is a "Firebird", a three valve Bb trumpet with a soprano trombone-like slide attached. I believe that the slide only has four positions, not the usual seven. Maynard used to play one of these. Don't know if he does anymore.
Did I hear somewhere that Holton might reintroduce these at a premium price? |

I've got a friend named Orenthal Resets who thinks he's got a really long tuning slide. Well, it's actually his 2nd valve slide. The 'dinky' one.

The last three (3) times I saw Maynard Ferguson in concert (over the last 1 1/2 years) he has played his Firebird. The song that he plays it on is called, "Misra-Dhenuka". It's on his "Brass Attitude" album.
To my knowledge, Maynard actually designed this horn with Holton. I've never played one personally myself, but would love the opportunity to try one. I've gotten to know Maynard's third trumpet player (Kevin Meads) pretty well and he told me awhile back that MF gave him one as a personal gift. Kevin tells me it is one of the "original" ones (I assume dating back to the late 1970's +/-). Kevin also told me that is really fun to play. _________________ Playing For Him,

I owned a Firebird.
After two days you are tired of playing with the slide.
The mediocre sound of that horn was a good reason to sell it quickly. |

If I didn't already have a wish list a mile long, this would definitely be getting a bid or two.
One of these is already on my list, but not near enough to the top to justify spending money at the moment.
I have a feeling that the final price will be a great deal higher than the current bid status. Memory serves that the last one of these went for quite a bit. |
