I've just got a quote for a CPT-3000-GLS(D)-Bb-SG, which has a 5.25" bell
It will cost about $1000 before import tax, and has a 4-6 month lead time.
There are a few videos of the large bell CarolBrass on Youtube by William Colletti, and it sounds quite great.
The Brasspire P7 on the other hand costs $1350 before import tax, and will pretty much ship instantly.
Really hard to decide |

Someone has a black large bell Carolbrass pocket Bb on the Marketplace right now. That is a good deal. I have one just like it, and it is terrific. _________________ Dan Pearlman

I worry about the black nickel finish.
I've read that it tends to wear quickly at contact points, so if I go for the Carol I will probably go for a silver plated one.
Have you compared it to other pocket trumpets perhaps? |

If I do end up getting the Carolbrass, I will most likely go with the custom one with the 5.25" bell I was quoted on
However, I am still not sure what to get since I'm pretty much going blind on this |

I don't agree with you, my pocket stays in the case all year but on the vacations is the horn that keep me in shape becose I must be ready to play when I return and usally I don't have even a day to prepare my chops , for a working musician is a great tool.

Ok, more specific: nobody really needs a pocket trumpet but there are people who don't understand the 'really'. |

This was the ground for my post. You better wish that you don't want one.
BTW I own a pocket trumpet but I never take it with me on holiday. End of this month I will go for two months to Thailand and my good old Ambassador cornet, packed in a small backpack, will go with me. I should hate to play two months on a pocket. I bought the pocket for my daylong bicycle trips in obscure parts of Holland to enjoy playing in the beautiful nature but the truth is that I only once took that little devil with me. So another waste of money.
mr. Giakara, maybe my statement was a little bit too generalistic but when I travel to Asia for two months or more, I carry about nine kilos of luggage including my Ambassador cornet. At the check-in I see lots of people who go for 14 days and have 35 kilos of luggage, seems to be quite normal. So why a pocket if you can carry a real horn? BTW, how does the tuba player mantain his chops on holiday? Baby tuba? |

I agree with Delano, that no one "needs" a pocket trumpet, and that an inexpensive cornet is a reasonable alternative when looking for portability. But that doesn't mean a pocket trumpet isn't a good choice for some people.
I've enjoyed playing my Carol Brass pocket trumpet for the past 6+ years. I play it regularly at work, when I'm on the road, or in general anytime I want to take a horn with me but don't want to risk damage to my regular trumpet.

FYI I use a pocket trumpet often when I do solo trumpet concerts with effects. One thing I want to say is yes, I could use a cornet... but cornet and me don't agree. Something with the cornet mouthpieces and the resistance. Before you go the "you haven't played the right one" I have owned EVERY cornet and make mouthpieces. For me the pocket trumpet is a much better fit and also the fact that the bell is close to my ears is fabulous for my musical needs.
Best,

I don't have the luxury to make two months vacations, for me is 15 to 20 days max every summer , I prefer to not have extra weight (my pocket is 1.5 kilos with case and my cornet 4.5) , I also now some guys here in Athens that don't play for 30 days and they don't have any problems, they are my heroes, monster player's with b@@@s of steel but I'm not one of them , I have to try hard to keep my chops in good working condition and be able to bring the bacon to my family every day in a very competitive environment so this little horn is a tool for me , as for the tuba guys I don't know how they do it.

I take a pocket trumpet with me when I travel to keep my chops in shape. Fits easily under the seat in front of me on an airplane. It also tucks away nicely in the corner of a car trunk. And if something happens to it, I won't be devastated. It also accepts my trumpet-mouthpiece-of-the-week. |

It’s interesting watching people on this thread getting offended about whether or not to own a pocket trumpet. I am fortunate that I can afford a few nice trumpets. I found my Kanstul pocket to be VERY useful when I took a 10 day trip to our nation’s Capitol last summer. I recently acquired a Benge CG pocket. It’s an amazing horn. No, it’s not going to take the place of my Marcinkiewicz, but it’s truly fun to play. I am looking forward to caroling on the pocket horns with my son at Christmas. It seems some of you are forgetting why we got into this in the first place: IT’S FUN!!!
Let’s let everyone enjoy this wonderful experience of music through the trumpet. We are truly fortunate to be able to perform, play, teach, and share this wonderful art form.
Best to Everyone.

Just a few things:
- my post was meant as a warning to people who are greedy for a toy and will be disappointed by the reality of a pocket trumpet, to get disappointed mostly is no fun.
- maintaining chops is ok but in priciple you don't need a pocket for that, even not for the space argument.
- if you have the money to own two 1,5 K horns for a 10 days trip it's cheaper to have a taxi driving behind you which carries your daily Marcinkiewicz horn.
- if the Benge CG pocket is not on par with your Marcinkiewicz:

or: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0c/2a/de/0c2ade20cfd70c7bdde2646d1b4943a6.jpg
Of course everybody must do what he likes but a forum like this is about information, then you can make your decision. |
