I purchased a used horn recently. The valves are quite nice, but they occasionally gitch - just a little. They don't stick in the down position, they just kind of take their time on the rebound once in a while. The valves are clean and well oiled. A technician told me the valves stick because the person(s) who played the horn prior to me struck the valves a little differently than I do, and therefore the valves will react this way on occasion. Thoughts? Can this pattern of prior wear be overcome by the regular striking of a different player (me)? Can I make the valves respond to my specific striking pattern after a while?

Come on now, don't blame me!!

Maybe you should stop that crazy straight up and down action and push a little toward the bell. (I may be "guilty" of that).

Actually, if you're talking about my old Z, I doubtful that two-years of casual playing would be enough to really set the valves into my playing style. I think it may have to do with Yamaha's really tight valves (the never stuck on me, but they were never lightening-fast either. Probably, a very light lapping will put them to your liking.

Dave,

It's not the Z. The Z you sold me is just fine. Do you feel better now?
