Record yourself. Listen critically. Work on issues you identify. It was a real eye opener to me when I began to record myself. What I heard on playback was different to the sound behind the horn, sometimes better than you thought sometimes worse almost always different. This was how I discovered the exact point where I developed tension when ascending. I actually heard it 1 full step before I “felt” tension. That allowed me to work the area in my range where I started to develop tightness and eventually move past that point. In my case it brought me back to earth in some areas and gives me good direction for my practice time.

Anything with longer-ish notes and some flow to it should do work.
The trick is working on playing with less tension which should result in what you're asking about. That's the hard part.

Having a clear concept in your "inner ear" and getting second party feedback, both of which have already been mentioned. But your question was on exercises.

It's easy enough to recommend various exercises that are designed to promote the desired result. However, there are physiological factors which exercises are never going to change. So, some players are never going to get a beautiful resonate sound no matter how much or which exercises they are doing. This is not to mention the fact that the definition of "a beautiful, resonate sound" is subjective and subject to significant differences of opinion.
I agree that recording yourself is an excellent way to monitor progress. I also agree that focusing on sustained sounds (long tones) is a good way (but not necessarily the only way) to approach this and measure progress. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

A few suggestions for you:
First, the usual suspects to develop good command and control over the instrument: scales, articulation, finger dexterity, lip flexibility, arpeggios, intervals.
Two exercises don't get mentioned often but are very helpful if done properly: sound production exercises, and long tones exercises with dynamic changes (e.g., start soft, crescendo, hold it, decrescendo back down to soft while keeping the note in tune). These improve embouchure and air control. Be careful not to overdo it--a little goes a long way. Lots of rest during and after. If these make you exhausted, you're overdoing it.
Practice with a drone to improve pitch awareness.
Play music expressively. Anything from lyrical tunes, art of phrasing, to pop tunes out of a fake book. Make it sound easy and expressive. This will help you produce a better sound, appropriate to the tunes, with greater ease. The best way to achieve a great sound, more often than not, is achieved by listening. If you know what you want to sound like, it’s more likely that you will get the sound you want. This isn’t to say that you will need to practice fundamentals. Long tones, flexibility exercises, etc. will get you where you want! |
