Hello all! Does anyone have any suggestions for replacing the cork on a Jo-Ral copper bubble mute? Where I could get the cork and what kind of glue to use? I would just re-glue the old cork but it's old and brittle. Thanks!! |

Search this site for a number of helpful threads.
Use paper to make a template for cutting the cork.
Remove the old cork with glue remover, acetone (be careful working with acetone), alcohol (slow but works), flux remover (from an electronics shop), or similar. Make sure the mute's surface is clean; use gloves to handle after cleaning so oils from your fingers don't create spots to which the glue will not stick.
Use automotive gasket cork or similar material, or get Funky Foam from a hobby store. Be sure to get a sulphur-free product (some basic rubber materials have sulphur in them and that can damage the finish of your horn).
Contact cement works well for attaching the cork.

make your own from flexible sheet cork, google it. use above template. use contact adhesive, but be carefeul, you get one shot putting it on with contact adhesive, if you mess it up, you'll have to start from scratch.
regards and good luck !!

You do realize, don't you, that none of the products that you listed that are sold by the company you work for, Hickey's Music Center, pertain to the original question? You posted links to straight and cup corks, not the cork for a harmon mute.
Your post got me thinking so I checked -- as far as I looked back (and I did not look at all of them) your posts have helpfully included links to items that your employer sells.
This seems to be blatant advertising in the forums, but, as has been pointed out to me before, I do not understand the rules and regulations regarding the posting of items for sale with the forums so maybe this is OK. |

Yeah....HARMON Mutes....big cork....got it...was not thinking carefully. Sorry bout that.
Yes, that is true that these items are from the company for which I work, Hickeys Music. I do hope that my responses have been helpful in that it is challenging to find specific literature and products that is readily available.
But as you say, there is a line there and I am sure people don't want a bunch of advertising clogging up each post. I have been posting for years and have kept my eye out for anyone (Trumpet Herald Members or administrators) who might have a concern. Nothing till now, but your concern is noted and I will bear it in mind going forward.

I think the issue with your initial response is that straight and cup mute corks are completely unworkable for any open tube type mute, such as harmon, Jo-Ral Bubble, Solo Tone, etc. These mutes require sheet cork or a similar material that completely seals the bell and forces the airflow through the mute. No straight or cup mute corks anywhere will ever be suitable for this.
So, the initial complaint about your first response is that it seems to direct the poster jonwiseman to your place of employment to buy a product that is not suitable for his needs and never will be. _________________ -Tom Hall-

I bought a lifetime supply of sheet cork at Menards. I don't think it was expensive, and it works really well. Mutes go in and stay in. I've done 5 mutes with the stuff. If my wah-wah had come with this 50 years ago, it wouldn't look like it does now. _________________ Benge CG, Early '70s Selmer piccolo, Early '80s Selmer piccolo, Conn 12A cornet, Conn 38A cornet, Conn 48A Connqueror "Vocabell", Conn Connquest 76A cornet, Conn Director 17A Coprion cornet, Conn Director 15A cornet, '50 Olds valve/slide trombone |

Put the old cork back, cut a section of bicycle inner tube and put that on top. It will stuck in the bell great and way easiier than replacing a Harmon cork! |

Be aware that some rubber compounds contain trace amounts of sulphur that can severely and perhaps permanently tarnish a silver plated bell. Some people have used inner tubes and been OK, but some have not... _________________ "After silence, that which best expresses the inexpressible, is music" - Aldous Huxley |

Is it risky to use contact cement on the copper Jo-Ral mute (as mentioned)? I noticed that my bottle says not to use on copper ALLOYS, but just wondering if anyone has run into trouble. |

well...ya beat me to it!
Just make sure it's a mountain bike inner tube and not a street bike tube. Another option is a kid's bike inner tube. Walmart, less than $5.00 & you'll have a bunch left over to cut for your trumpet pals.
Cut a section about 1.5" long, wash it with soap & water (to get the powder out of the inside), let it dry then stretch & pull over the cork. Pull it down to where it goes past the edge of the cork. Trim the top so it's even.
Over time it will slowly start creeping up but then just pull it back down. It'll never suddenly go flying off.
The biggest adjustment you'll need to make is do NOT press and turn it hard into your bell like you're accustomed to doing with just cork. It takes very little effort to get the rubber to grab in your bell. _________________ Tim Wendt

The link further up the thread to the redwing band instrument repair page also gives an item number for the automotive head gasket material sold by McMaster-Carr that best replaces the original. The sheet is kinda big though so it’d be enough for you and all your trumpet player buddies. |

Someone should point out that the template is for a Harmon Brand mute. I have done other brands and had to make my own template. I've also done other mutes like a Solotone or Whispa and you need to make your own for those as well. _________________ Benge CG, Early '70s Selmer piccolo, Early '80s Selmer piccolo, Conn 12A cornet, Conn 38A cornet, Conn 48A Connqueror "Vocabell", Conn Connquest 76A cornet, Conn Director 17A Coprion cornet, Conn Director 15A cornet, '50 Olds valve/slide trombone |

Foam rubber (eva) sheets are available at many craft stores.. a sheet of dense foam with one sticky side...
Cut to shape and use instead of cork - my Jo-Ral copper bubble has not fallen out since.
As I peeled off the original cork, I had enough of a body to make a template of the shape. _________________ Freelance Performer/Educator
