I’m looking for a good practice mute to use so I can practice in my apartment. What are some good ones that add the least resistance? |

For a purely acoustic mute, I like the Trumcor Stealth.
For electronic options, I don't hate my 1st generation Yamaha Silent Brass but hear the new model is quite a bit better.
In a pinch, I usually use my JoRal Bubble without stem.
To be clear, I don't think any mute facilitates a complete workout. There are only certain things I try to achieve when using any mute. And I usually keep those practice sessions short. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."

I've used some of the best but use the Yamaha Silent Mute. As a mute alone, it works well. With the electronics, I think the biggest advantage is that it keeps you from overblowing, if used right.
I have both generations and I think they both have advantages and disadvantages, the biggest advantage for me is that, due to strokes, the current one is a little lighter. The former, though, isn't any heavier that most other common mutes.
Here are the results of a very good survey:

It just so happens that I just bought one more practice mute... and this one is the best one I own (I think I have 4 or 5 or 6including Yamaha Silent Brass, ProTec and a bunch of others. It is called the Pampet mute.
link
I was at a student's home last Sunday and saw this strange looking mute on the table. The dad is a trumpet player too and I don't know how he found this one. But I had to try it... and wow. SO little resistance. It is probably the first mute I can practice with.
It's not as quiet as some others, but quiet enough for most situations. But what I found scaringly interesting was that I could feel not only feel the pitches slot well, but I could feel the response of the trumpet in my hands! I don't think I feel that much vibration without a mute.
The plastic seems to have multiple densities throughout and a plastic washer-like thing on the front. It's about the size of a Denis Wick straight mute so not large or small. It is also very light weight so you really don't feel it pulling the bell down as much as other mutes. And $18.. way cheaper than others.
If you don't need super quiet I would tell you to take a shot with this one. _________________ Schilke B1, Bach 37, 1969 Getzen Severinsen Eterna

That looks promising if you just need to tame things down a bit... and the price is right!! _________________ MH |

The best practice mute by far is my Renuzit homemade mute, but the renuzit company changed the shape of their air fresheners and they don't fit in the horn they way the old style did, i followed the internet instructions on how to make it and filled it with a special air filter material we use on the job. I played around with how much i stuffed in it and got it just right. It's really quiet, has the least amount of back pressure i have ever felt in a practice mute and is in tune throughout the whole scale from low F# to above high C.
But i must admit i hardly ever use it because i can play without it all day and at night i play in my sound insulated basement so its really never an issue for me. I own the original silent brass and found it ok to use, since it gives the illusion of no pressure when you use the headphones and the reverb setting. Wallace mutes are nice, but they are way to pricey for me to justify. i have also heard good things about Matt Anklans mute insert that makes your harmon act like a practice mute, i may try one of those.
good luck in your search, look under your kitchen sink, there probably is an old renuzit air freshener there and look up the internet instructions on how to make one. it's easy and you can play around with different fillers to get something you like.
good luck,
tom

If you have Amazon Prime it comes with free two-day shipping and you can return it easily if you don't like it. BTW... I didn't mention it.. but I have a renuzit too. This is SO much better. The Renuzit doesn't slot well as most practice mutes don't but the Pampet is on another level (IMO). _________________ Schilke B1, Bach 37, 1969 Getzen Severinsen Eterna

It's almost a joke that this product exists:
https://www.dillonmusic.com/dillon-music-dillon-music-trumpet-practice-mute.html
It's a copy of the Best Brass practice mute and it is every bit as good for a fraction of the price. I've owned and used this guy for at least seven years and don't have a single complaint about it! _________________ Bb: Yamaha 9335NY Gen3

Would be nice if she played both open and muted so we could contrast.

Anyone else notice that the survey gives exactly one mute a perfect score?

Would you (or anybody) know the weight difference between this and a current Yamaha Silent Mute? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

Timely post, as I recently went and bought the sshhmute which most seem to rave about.
Gotta tell you; I hate it! Yes, it's quiet but the backpressure actually promotes throat closing issues IMO. Same as all the other practice mutes I've tried.
On the search for something that plays openly and yet still quiet, and being able to play as loud as you wish, I've discovered playing into a rolled-up thick blanket is best of all. (Make a tube out of it) Works for me anyhow. |

I really like the Wallace Studio Practice Mute. Wallace makes a smaller one but many practice mutes that I've had tend to get flaky in the intonation.
For me, the Wallace is as quiet as it gets without really hurting with back-pressure problems. I've played it in Hotel rooms and then went to dinner with people in the next room (closest) to mine and asked them, "Did you hear me practice my trumpet? I did use a practice mute..." They've always been shocked that it would be so quite that with no tv, no music - they still could not hear me practice at all. Great mute - bought used here at TH.
Here's a video with a few practice mutes...

The "Silencer" from Eazy Bucket..
http://www.theeazybucket.com
Very effective, doesn't mess with pitch much, nor creates a ton of backpressure.
Best Brass' "Warm-up Nano"

Also works very well, but you need a Harmon mute. If your traveling, or have little carry space (you already have a Harmon with you), this can be a good choice.

I have an insert for a Harmon mute. Great if you're traveling with a Harmon and need the space, but I can't stand the tinny sound.
I'm still curious about the weight/balance difference between the Silencer and the Yamaha mute. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
