|
|
I got myTom Hooten CD today. It was John William's Concerto for Trumpet with John Williams conducting.
The first thing I did after listening to it was to go check my trumpet and try to figure out why my trumpet doesn't sound like his does.
It probably goes without saying that the playing was outstanding throughout. The orchestra was equally superb. Principal in the orchestra was our own Jim Wilt.
In addition to William's concerto, it also has William's Born on the Fourth of July.
Hooten's solo CD, Trumpet Call, was outstanding when it came out in 2010 (actually it's still outstanding) and this recording again shows what great trumpet playing should sound like.
I highly recommend it. It's available for download (Apple, etc) and the CD can be purchased at CD Baby https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/thomashooten3 [fixed URL]

You've ended up with an extra 'y' at the end of your link:

Can't wait to hear this one. The Sandoval recording is currently the only other recording I know of, but it will be very interesting to hear Hooten's interpretation! |

Thanks for raising this!
Tom Hooten is one of the finest players in the world and listening to him is always a pleasure.
All the best
Edit: do you know if the whole CD is on C trumpet? What did Arturo use for the concerto? |

Yes, this recording is fantastic!! He has such a mastery of the instrument. It's as though the music comes directly from his brain to the audience, the ultimate goal!!

What a great sound! | As I mentioned in my original post, it makes me wonder what's WRONG with my trumpet because it doesn't sound like that.... I know, perhaps it's the MOUTHPIECE!!! |

The best description of this album I've heard is "I hate how perfect he sounds." Excellent recording! |

Is it just me or has the end of the first movement been re orchestrated? I decided to follow along with my printed part and coming out of the cadenza to the end of the first movement is not what is printed in the Hal Leonard production release. _________________ Scott Jones

Yes, it is different. We got a revised edition a few weeks before the session. _________________ Jim Wilt
