|
|
Kid plays at a high level, definitely has a chance at the top places. Kid will be in the summer between junior year and senior year in 2020, plans to apply for classical trumpet performance programs (but also plays jazz).
I know about NYO-USA, Tanglewood, Aspen, and Interlochen. Any other recommendations of what kid should apply for, that might be of use in the college application process? For instance, trumpet institutes at schools where kid might apply, that would give faculty a chance to get a look at kid?
We live in southern New England.
Also interested in summer institutes taking place in August, 2019.
Thanks for your help. |

Here is a link to a lengthy list of music summer camps from the International Trumpet Guild (ITG), some of which are trumpet specific:

If there is a specific school your child has in mind you should check to see if that school offers a camp. For instance, Oberlin has an annual Trumpet Workshop and University of Indiana has their annual College Audition Preparation program.
Good luck! |

Thanks, this list has been very useful to me in the past. But now I'm thinking about whether there are any, other than the ones I've listed, that would be of significance in the college admissions process.
We haven't yet come up with a list of schools to apply to (kid's currently in tenth grade), but kid could go to a trumpet institute this August, if one were appropriate. |

My limited understanding is that being accepted into the 'performance track' of top level music institutes and colleges is more dependent on the audition tape or live audition that is done within about 6 (or so) months of the beginning of the program.
Attendance at earlier camps / clinics / etc. could certainly be good for increasing performance ability, and learning about what various programs have to offer, but I'm not sure how much influence they have as a criteria for acceptance (or for 'making contacts').
Given the age of the child, learning about the options for various 'career paths' should be a major activity. And also consider the actual employment possibilities that go along with them.
Many people who have ambitions for a career in performance get a degree in related fields such as Music Ed, production, management, etc.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

There is another one to be added to this list for summer of 2020.
The World Trumpet Society is having it's inaugural seminar from from August 20-25 in Kingston Ontario, Canada (Queens University).
There are phenomenal guest artists such as Huw Morgan, Wayne Bergeron, Philip Cobb and many faculty from all over North America. On top of this, there are outstanding prizes for competitions in all areas - a brand new Yamaha Bb Trumpet for the winner of the High School division by the way.
The 2018 seminar is very affordable and will be a wonderful time!

Any summer activity will look good.
I'll throw in the Brevard Music Festival that has a high school division in it as well as college. Good way to start networking with his eventual peer group. Aspen was great for the high school students but there were only a few non-violin/piano kids the year I went. Tanglewood is the BUTI program in case you didn't know.
National Trumpet Competition during the school year is useful too, but don't make the entire year about one movement of one solo.
Like brassmonkey suggested, look into some shorter programs: domaine forget in Canada, Marrowstone in washington state. Also look into visiting the specific schools he'd like to get into and getting lessons/visit. No use in spending $6000+ if he has a great music teacher. You learn a lot and have incredible fun, but ultimately his playing will do the talking. |

For anyone who comes across this thread in the future, my high school kid went to this in 2019 and had an amazing experience. Highly recommended for advanced high school and college trumpeters looking for a great conference to attend. |
