Thanks for the response. Nice to know i don't have to be a great buzzer. I do buzz and it helps a lot but I just can't buzz high. _________________ Roel Flores |

Hi everyone,
In high school and during my undergraduate studies 25 years ago, I used buzzing basically everyday as part of my warm up. I have been a band director for almost 20 years now and still play trumpet just enough to stay happy and aggrivated. I have recently increased my practice time and returned to a more consistent use of mouthpiece buzzing including Buzzing Basics. I have noticed an increased ease and resonance in my sound. I know the increased practice time can be given some of the credit, but I believe that Buzzing Basics is the cornerstone of my recent improvement.
For those of you that buzz as part of your routine, do you buzz just the mouthpiece or use some type of buzzing aide like a BERP etc?
Thanks and happy trumpeting!
Stan

I went off an on with a berp and with a brassbuzzer. The berp had some resistance to it which was nice at times.
Since I now to 1-4 first thing in the morning and with a practice mute, I cup my hand around the mouthpiece when I buzz to make it muffled. The added resistance has been excellent training. I have noticed no negative impact in doing it with a practice mute and muffled mouthpiece. I, however, still try to do it un-muffled once or twice a week if possible. _________________ Interlochen Arts Academy GED '06

I've been doing the first 4 exercises every day since 2015, when I took a lesson from James Thompson. The results have been great!
I've just started to do Stamp Ex3 this week.

I use Thompson right at the beginning of the playing day, after doing breathing exercises a la Gordon and free-buzzing a la Poper. Right now I'm only using exercises 1-4. This is my second pass through Thompson. All told, perhaps fifteen minutes from the start. So far, this has resulted in a very efficient warmup and leads easily into the beginning of practice. |

I've been doing it on and off for several years now. Just recently, two weeks ago, restarted the Buzzing Book(1-9) and in addition played the Dave Belknap Schlossberg routine. Probably not for the faint of heart...but has given my chops a better feel the last few weeks...not to mention strength.
Every time I go away from the Thompson and then come back I wonder why I ever put it away. |

Ditto...I am a big believer. Arnold Jacobs taught everything happens at the lips. Inhale, exhale, and the singing. |

I have a question about exercise 8, the one that goes from low C up to top-of-the-staff G. Since this starts below the low break, should I be doing the preliminary middle G - low C glissando before I play it, just like it's instructed for #5? Thanks in advance |

Yes.
I have taken several lessons with Jim and he says that in any exercise that starts lower than second line G, do the glissando. It doesn't have to be fancy, as long as you start on the G and go down to the starting note of the exercise, then start the exercise without removing or adjusting the mouthpiece. That includes the on-the-horn section of exercise 2 as well.

Thank you! I didn't know I was supposed to do that also for the on-the-horn part of #2 |
