|
|
I am a 66 year old first time trumpet student and just love it so far. I've got a 1916 Conn 2B trumpet with USQMC engraved on the Bell which indicates it was made for the Army. Do any of you know if there is a way to find out its military history using the serial number? I am a member of Veteran Honor Guard and will use it to sound TAPS. In that capacity, the history would be interesting. Thanks. |

I've never run into that sort of info researching Conn instruments, but if anyone would know, or know where to direct you, it would be Conn expert Dr. Banks:

A Conn 2B from 1916? I thought that model originated from the 1920s. Anywho, this looks like a very rare instrument, would love to see pics. |

The 2B New World Symphony Trumpet was made 1926-1932. The model numbering scheme began in 1920. If the serial number is 1916, it's a Conn Symphony Trumpet built to military specs. The US Army Quartermaster Corps has a record of every serial number purchased back in the day (paper record). Years ago, they used to look up serial numbers for people to identify where a horn was used - but that may be a thing of the past. _________________ Ron Berndt

Marking refers to US Quartermaster Marine corps. Usually a regular horn sold to military. _________________ Steve Hollahan

Thank you for the responses. The horn, serial number 152xxx, does make it a 1916 so is not a 2b. The USQMC marking makes it an Army issue. Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of a source to track down the old Quartermaster Corps records. So far, I haven't had much luck. Thanks again to all. |

Best guess would be to contact the QMC museum at Fort Lee VA and see if they can help with contact info for the archives unit. _________________ Ron Berndt
