The older I get, the more I find that a warmup is important. I used to be able to just grab the horn cold and go! Not any more.
One thing I've noticed lately is that sometimes it takes my breathing a long time to get to that nice, relaxed, free breath that we need when playing. (I stay really fit, workouts 5-6 days a week, so it's not like I'm out of shape or anything.) And sometimes I abuse my chops trying to get everything working before the breathing is right! I'd like to always have my breathing in order before I put the mouthpiece on my face.
So I ask you - do you do any breathing exercises to get the breath right before you put the horn on your face? Deep breathing, stretches, or whatever? Any suggestions would be helpful!
Cheers. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

Getting up there, chronologically speaking, as well. (67) I do a lot of breathing exercises in the car and have started doing some leadpipe playing for a few minutes ahead of actual warmup. (I use the standard Stamp most days followed with Chicowicz and some ripping Colin exercises.)
There's a good article in ITG Journal concerning leadpipe playing that I recommend reading. If nothing else, it gets one blowing up to pitch right off the bat, and I think this may be one of your concerns. Good luck, all the best. |

No, I don't do any exercises specific to breathing, but I always do a warmup consisting of at least four pages from Arban's. |

I took some lessons from a top L.A. studio player after I had spent time in school reading various books on breathing etc. "Do you collapse inward as you exhale or do you keep an expanded torso?", and other things which just messed with my mind. So I asked my teacher, "How do you breath?" He said, "Cough". "See?" _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I seem to remember somewhere watching a YouTube video where Chris Martin was talking about his daily routine, and I think he mentioned some breathing stuff he did before putting the horn on his face. Was it maybe in the Monster Oil BrassChat interview? Maybe I'll have to find the time to rewatch that one... My memory may be faulty, though... _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet
