He ran a competition as well, offering a large sum of money to anyone who could play louder or higher than him (IIRC) and nobody was successful in taking the money home, including Arturo. If someone wants to add detail to this, please do.
Jerry got banned from the FMEA convention exhibit hall.
I think that pretty much sums it up. We can move on to something important now.
Actually, John Mohan's quote is really funny. But the OP has asked a legitimate question and to many, as funny as John's quote is, maybe it doesn't "pretty much sum it up". If this isn't important to you, you can move on. But to suggest that "we can move on to something important now" seems pretty judgmental to me.
Just because high notes don't intoxicate me doesn't mean I have no interest in the responses to this thread. And if I find that I am loosing interest in this (or for that matter any other) thread, I will move on. But for me to then suggest that we should all move on is presumptuous and arrogant.
Iβm surprised more people havenβt declared themselves the winner. This is a trumpet players forum right?
I think most of us are at least a little humble on the topic of loud high notes, because we all know of a good number of players who can easily do better in this regard than we can...

How much value is there in having the loudest volume, per se?
Did anybody have a bigger, yet more beautiful and musical sound than that of Conrad Gozzo? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

For some reason lately embedded Youtube videos don't want to play from inside this site, although you can go the the word "link" that appears below the video applet. I got rid of the Youtube tags and just linked to the video. _________________ Getzen Eterna Severinsen

Bud Brisbois may have been unmatched for high note production, but he depended a lot on the microphone. His sound was relatively small compared to many players.
"Some of the problems that Bud did have was that he never got a really big sound, which is because he was using the Costello pinched aperture thing. He could control the xxxx out of it and but couldn't get much sound and it drove him nuts." Bobby Shew

Doesn't it depend on how it's used?
I was playing next to a guy who had played lead for, among others, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. He started yelling at me to play louder. About the third time he did it, I was frustrated and yelled back, "Me louder? I can hardly hear you."
And he said his sound concept (we were recording) was to send a concentrated, corkscrew-like sound at the mic. Sure enough, when we listened to the playback, his sound was right uup front. Situational. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

hello kehaulani
Bobby learned the yoga breath from Bud, and he knew him very well, so he has some reasons to say that about Bud. And he does know about sound (i mean he makes the difference between sound that stays more around the player or that projects more)
