Hi All,
Just a post to introduce myself.

I'm a returner to trumpet playing after a LONG layoff. I've not played properly since school (I'm aproaching 30 now.) and Oh, boy! You can tell! I mangaged to pick up a Holton T601 trumpet at a good price. So my first question is, is this regarded as a good trumpet or not?

As for any other newbe questions, is there a FAQ or anything that I can look at to save asking what must be repeated questions.

Also, are there any web sites or specific books that you could recomend to getting back into trumpet playing? I'm realy struggling on my own and paying for lessons is quite expencive in the UK.

Thanks in advance

All the best
Phil

No opinion on the trumpet -- most anything should work OK for now, I'd imagine.

I'm thinking on the books... It'd be interesting to see what, say 3 to 5, books people would suggest to a returning player (vs. new student). Arbans, I'm sure, plus what? Maybe Clyde Hunt's Sail the Seven C's and Claude Gordon's Brass Playing is No Harder than Deep Breathing or Dee Stewart's Legacy of a Master just to provide some variety and human interest? How about Jeff Smiley's Balanced Embouchure -- I think I'd put it near the top of my list! Carmen Caruso? I think if I had to choose just a few from my (way too extensive) collection, I'd get some lesson material plus some "outside" reading like that above to provide some other useful material. And, the books must be clear and easy to read and to follow. What do others think?

Regarding web sites, I always start at the ITG site, http://www.trumpetguild.org, as Ralph Jones maintains a very extensive set of links. Plus, there's a whole lot of other useful material there! Look at the Youth Section -- lots of great stuff for comeback players. And, Ole Utnes has a site for comeback players (and everyone else) at http://abel.hive.no/trompet/

Others will chime in soon, but there're some places to start.

HTH - Don

Aaarrrgghhhh! More brain farts in one day than in the last week (at least, on-line, and I ain't a-talkin' 'bout 't others).

How many posts before my status changes from "Veteran" to "senile old codger"?

Oh, well... Since I'm wasting bandwidth, might as well note that you've had some great posts lately, Dave -- great work!

Gotta' go take a nap, now, bye-bye - Don

Hi! Welcome on this great forum. I think you will find every information you need for a succesful comeback. You can find lots of articles in the different forums. Cause it is difficult to read every post I suggest to use the "search"-option. If you have questions just post them. Here are great people who want to help and really can help. One of the many many great guys out there is Roddy. Surf to his webpage http://www.r-o-d-d-y-t-r-u-m-p-e-t.cc .

I can't give you more advice than enjoy the forum, dare to ask and have fun with a great instrument - the trumpet.

---------------
As long as the Holton is in decent playing condition, it should be fine - it is/was a quality instrument, and well regarded in the US.

There's a huge amount of info on the web - some good, and a whole lot that isn't .

I suggest starting with the recommendations in this thread

If only the people trying to get their 5 posts would just spam modern threads.

But tell me more about that trumpet you listed in the Marketplace... It looks pretty special.

Which one? The $500 Olds Ambassador, the triple case, the Xeno, or the Accent Eb\D?
