I'm sure Carmine could tell objectively better than I could. However, since you're working without benefit of regular observation by "the master", I would say...
When all or most most of the notes start to speak clearly (most every day), the first and last note of the spiders feel like the center of your register, and the two outside notes (the octaves) no longer feel like you have to reach for them excessively that is a good time to move on. It doesn't have to be "perfect"! |

In the new book, FLEXUS (by Frink & McNeil), you will find both developed scales and spiders.. and as the foreword says:
FLEXUS synthesizes the teaching techniques of Laurie Frink, John McNeil and Carmine Caruso,...
The more I use that book the better I like it!

Let's see if I've got this straight. For the nodes I just relax the embouchure 'til the note drops to the next harmonic below. What about the air speed? Wouldn't it be slower for the lower pitch? Or is the difference insignificant? |

I retrieve this old conversation to ask a question. how many times a day do you have to do the spider exercise ?, bugleboy says you have to do it several times, that's why I'm confused. I usually do the callestenia in the morning and in the afternoon other studies and music. should i introduce the spiders in the afternoons? Thanks a lot !! _________________ Notice!!! I do my entire set of calisthenics first thing in the day, as you do. Do it once and I'm good to go. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

I'm glad this thread came back around. I was never assigned either of these exercises. Maybe it was the time period when I took lessons or maybe they were medicine for a condition I didn't have. I was assigned something similar to the "nodes" exercise. I was to play chromatically from 3rd space C down to 2nd line G and back up. It was to be done two ways: first on the mouthpiece, then on the horn without using valves. Carmine told me to make the lips emulate what they did with the mouthpiece when I was playing it on the horn.

Re spiders - what is the timing? Quarter notes at 60? And it sounds like you consider spiders part of your calisthenics routine? Thanks! |
