I did another video today. Many people wonder how you get, or make, a backbore reamer, and it’s a bit involved but not really difficult. This is the first part of a three parts series on making the backbore reamer.
The second part will heat treating
The third part will grinding the cutting edge and sharpening

Getting the taper right seems like the hard part to me. |

It’s not really a taper most times. It’s a curve to an extent. In the video it’s should seem pretty easy to do. It’s not difficult per se. _________________ Mouthpiece Maker

I'm really enjoying these videos! Looking forward to hardening and grinding.
I've done similar work to make special tooling to fit the tapers (supposedly MT0) on the headstock and tailstock of my lathe. As you said, it's not 'difficult', but does take time, and can get frustrating when 'fixing' one area exposes new areas that need attention.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'. |

I think I would be afraid to own my own backbore reamer - you know what they say "Give a child a hammer and the entire world becomes a nail."
With my assortment of filed down screwdrivers, it takes me hours to do a "Zottola" and ruin a perfectly good mouthpiece. (Zottolas are fine mouthpieces but my screwdriver maiming results in a stepped Zotolla style backbore.)
Gosh, with my own reamer I could turn a Bach 3C into a "Manriki gusari " chain weight in only seconds.
On a slightly more serious note - Matt Frost's PhD dissertation provides an excellent reference on backbore properties - shape vs. total interior volume and the effect on how bright or dark the backbore sounds can be found for PDF download at

I can proudly state that I read all 383 pages of it and actually understood part of page 10.

Doug, great stuff!! Looking forward to seeing more of the process...
Andy, wow- that is fascinating! I perused a couple pages quickly and I kind of
understand pg. 10 also...plus I like the pretty pictures
He did some serious number crunching, also interesting on the players he used. |

I always thought that zottola made steps cuz you simply need a few drill bits. Honestly the stepped thing is not too bad. No reamer required. I never really got a good set of steps. Always felt too big of too small. I only made maybe ten of them. With enough trial and error who knows _________________ Mouthpiece Maker
